that's an absurd statement to make
he may not be worth a 2nd in some eyes
but as a no strings attached UFA he is definitely worth signing

Any GM that would do this would have their reputation tarnished.
The Hawks would also cry foul to the league.

I'm sure the idea was discussed with Gaudreau and Arnold at some point this year. I think he wants to sign with Calgary.

If Cammy has decided he'd prefer to move on, and Chicago is appealing to him, I definitely wouldn't mind trading his rights for Hayes'.
But either way, us and FLA are definitely front runners here. I can see Burke jumping on the prospect of a big, skilled kid with a right handed shot who would be interested in joining the organization.

would you trade Cundari and a 2nd to get Greg Nemisz? No! Why? He was a first rounder #25th overall...
A prospect is a prospect regardless of what pick he was picked with! I doubt the Flames will trade picks for him, a prospect swap is a lot more likely.

Nemisz was a failed pick - in hindsight. What is your point? You therefore don't like 1st round picks?
Hayes is not a bust at this point - he has a legitimate shot at the NHL

Hawks would need Cammalleri to take a significan't pay cut to fit him in next year.
Only have $3 million in cap space to replace Handzus and sign a backup goalie

Fair enough. But if the Hawks are content with getting the compensatory pick (or more realistically, no better offer comes in), are they really going to stand in the way?

I don't think the Panthers are going to move the 31st or 32nd overall pick for straight up for Hayes. So unless they move a more valuable 2015 second rounder or prospects, then they just might wait him out as well.

That's a disingenuous argument. You're comparing Hayes with 4 years of NCAA development vs. Nemisz on draft day.

My point is that you can't look at him as a first round pick. Its a bit like comparing apples to oranges once a pick is used on a player. He does seem like a decent player though, otherwise those news wouldn't attract too much attention. I just don't want to overpay for a player because he was a first round pick. Tim Erixon is a great example of that in my opinion.

Maybe the Panthers know that they don't need to trade anything for his rights. I know that tampering is a no no, but the guys brother plays for them. You can't tell me they won't be asking him questions about where Kevin plans to go.

You're right - just because he was a 1st round pick 4 years ago, doesn't mean he is worth that now.
However, Hayes IS worth that now. Probably more. I would much rather have Hayes than a late 1st in this year's draft.

Chicago are in some kinda cap trouble next season, if the rumours of a cap closer to 68M rather than 71M are true - perhaps a trade where we take a contract from them, with the rights to Hayes being the incentive.
Roszival + rights to Hayes for a pick this year, Flames own 3rd rounder perhaps?

Cammalleri wasn't worth a second at the deadline, yet some people think that's going to get Chicago to deal Hayes' rights? They would be much better waiting for the 2nd from the league.

Does anyone have the Hawks contract situation right now? I know there were close to 50.
If Hayes was going to have to wait for next year for his contract to start anyways then there really isn't much reason to sign when you can wait a few months and go to any team.

Its 2/3 months of Cammy vs years of a guy under your control and on cheap contracts.

The only way you get to talk to his agent is if you have an agreement with Chicago first. Otherwise, it is tampering, and you risk having the contract voided while being disqualified from trying to sign the player again, a seven figure fine and the loss of draft picks.
