The only thing worse than a 60 year old bald man with a rug on his head is to have that rug look like it came off an 18 year old man. At least put some grey in there to show you are trying not to look just sad.

He owes everything he has today to Quentin Tarantino.

It's a boring non-offensive Oscar. The only time I laughed was when Jamie Fox inadvertantly said something will blow...............your mind and did the Chariots of fire dance.

The best two speeches came form Jared Leto and Lupita.

The only parts he liked more were The Wizard of Oz tribute and Bette Middler signing The Wind Beneath My Wings, in which he cried during both performances. So stuff like that isn't really for the young crowd, but for the people who remember all the performers from 50+ years ago. She was great in Vertigo btw, better than any performances you saw this year.

I still think there are way too many montages though. It's fine and dandy that they want to keep the short films and technical awards, but do they really need so many montages? You could tell even the people there were getting bored after 3+ hours and just wanted to get out of there. Small nitpick as well, but it was great how they showed clips from Jaden Smith's crappy Karate Kid remake, and nothing from the infinity superior Ralph Macchio version. Good taste Hollywood.... good taste.

Alright, let's not go poo-pooing every performance this year on account of Novak. She was good, but I think you might be suffering from some sort of nostalgia complex. Plenty of better performances than hers in Vertigo happened this year.

As far as her looking good, I thought she looked like she had been hit by a bus. True beauty ruined with a knife. Oh well.

You obviously need to watch Vertigo again. There's a reason many say it's the greatest movie of all-time.

And that reason is not Novak. I've written University level essays on Vertigo, it's one of my absolute favourites and I'd like to think I've seen it enough time to pass well founded judgement on the areas it lacks. Novak was good, worthy of praise, but in no way was her performance more remarkable than the 3 or 4 standouts you see every year.

Not to discredit her OR Vertigo, but "better than any performance you'll see this year" is a stretch. Well, it's either a stretch or you just aren't going to watch many films this year.

You proved my point with your apple rant. This thread isn't about Apple yet you felt compelled to explain why you don't like it and it's the same reason we had people here cheering against Gravity. You all go out of your way to dislike something that a lot of people like.

Nope, I've seen pretty much everything this year. With the exception of Nebraska and Philomena, which I assume I'll get to eventually. But everything in Vertigo is far superior to what you find in movies today. Novak pulled off both of her roles in that movie superbly, and to this day many people become shocked at the conclusion, and the part she plays in it.

There are probably 10 Hitchcock films that are better than any movie released in 2013 alone (North By Northwest, Rear Window, Vertigo, Dial M For Murder, Strangers on a Train, Psycho, The 39 Steps, Rope, The Birds, and Notorious). Heck even after that he still has plenty of great movies. They just don't make them like they used to. Vertigo isn't even my favorite Hitchcock film, but there is just so many flawless aspects of that film, and Novak's performance is one of them. It's funny that Rebecca is Hitchcock's only movie that won best picture, and yet most critics don't rank it near the top of his own list of best movies.

Haha, McConaughey does nothing notable for almost two decades and wins an Oscar on his first try. DiCaprio has been shooting for an Oscar in about the same period and is now 0 for 5 (What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and was nominated twice for Wolf of Wall Street). Then you can add in all the other performances that may have been at least worthy of a nomination. He'll win it eventually (probably a few times), but maybe he needs to try something on his own, and get away from Scorsese for a bit to distinguish himself in another light. Surely he'll make due with everything he else he has though (fame, fortune, supermodels, etc).

Nope

I, along with many critics, find her wooden.

I don't think Vertigo is ever going to conclusively unite people on every aspect.

Well I think you're flat out wrong on your critique of her performance. Even if she was wooden, it kinda fits the character who was supposed just an empty shell for Stewart to pine after. Hitchcock always knew how to get the best out of his female leads even when he often hired them based on their appearance and demeanor, Novak was no exception.

It's probably alright to agree to disagree in this scenario.
