Don't see Monahan winning the Calder with Hertl playing with Thornton and Jones playing so well.

I actually agree with you in that his desires for success, whether personal or team (both in the short term) have little to do with this decision. I think he will be successful either way. My response was tongue in cheek to what I thought was a pretty weak question over whether Monahan should/would be sacrificing consideration for the Calder by going to the WJC.

This is such BS.
When Sweden win the kids were crying they were so happy and they had a parade when they got home. The American kids were ecstatic last year and every team celebrates a ton if they beat Canada.
Look around the internet and Euro fans can't post fast enough the few times Canada loses.
Of course like any hockey event Canada cares more but the BS about other countries not caring is not true at all.

So, by your logic, the tournament is important to him. Since he's Canadian. Then I agree with you, he should go.

Selfishly as a big fan of the WJHC and a Canada fan I definitely want him to go.
I think that how much it helps/hurts is being overstated here I think it likely doesn't change much either way in terms of his development.
The Flames are already out of the play-off race so that takes that concern out of it so I think it comes down to what they think is best for Monahan and what he wants to do if he has a strong feeling either way.
If he seems like he is hitting a wall a bit like young kids do then I think it is a good chance for him to get a bit of a break from the NHL grind and go have a blast playing with his peers and for his country. If he is playing well then I can see why the Flames would want to keep him here to continue his development.
I don't think there is a right or wrong answer and either way he is likely to develop into a very good, if not great, NHL player.

Not BS at all.
Europeans don't care about the tournament, it's the same how Canada doesn't care about the World Championships. So you're saying Canadians aren't happy if they win it? Of course Euro fans mock Canadians (If you lose) because you care about the tournament so much.

They care. Maybe not every fan cares (but enough do) and it isn't as important as the WHC but they do care. Just watch the players reaction and it is all you need to see how much they care about the tournament.
Saying anything else is just trying to downplay their poor performances in the tournament.

Poirier played on the second line behind 3 locks for Team Canada that have a very good chance of all playing on a line together at the WJHC. How was he used poorly and how should he have been used instead?

I say let Monahan play in the WJC. Last year, Monahan played on a bad team and the Flames are unlikely to make the playoffs this season. The WJC will be the closest thing Monahan will experience to a playoff atmosphere in the past two years. Monahan will also be expected to be a key performer and that's the type of pressure you want to expose Monahan to and see how he responds.

I say let him play in WJC, but only if he is healthy and cleared. It would be a good way to allow him to ramp up and comeback with some game action under his belt.
If he is not healthy enough to play for World Juniors, rehab until healthy enough to comeback and play with the Flames.

I'd rather see him in the WJC. Flames are going nowhere this year so what's the point?
A month off or so isn't going to kill his development.

What happens if he gets hurt at the WJHC? Say a knee or ankle injury.

He got no PP time at all during the second game, and if I had to guesstimate only received around 10-12 minutes of total icetime. I can't speak to how he was utilized in the first game as I did not watch all three periods.
I am not sure if the treatment of his icetime was as a result of his play during the first game, or if Benoit Groulx (his head coach in Gatineau) simply wanted to get more of a first hand look at the other participants seeing as he will be an assistant coach to Brent in Malmo.

So, does that apply to Canada aswell on WHC?

My guess is that they wanted to get a look at other guys on the PP and the fact that he played twice while some guys will only play in one game is better than nothing.

Monahan has a very good shot at the Calder given how well the Abbotsford Heat are playing. And that Flames have virtually no chance of playoffs.

I voted no because I think the kid deserves be asked if he wants to go and I think his desire would be to stay at this point. Plus I think the ticket holders want to see him at the dome.

I think yes for all the same reasons. I think he'd want to go win a gold medal for his country and get his foot in the door with hockey Canada. And I think ticket holders will be excited to see a Flame there as it would give more people a reason to watch. I also think the flames brass want to make him happy so he stays here for as long as possible. He isn't winning the Calder, he's not wining the cup, let's let the kid win something this year...
