It's like a JV thing - TSN does the production, but NHL is an equal partner. Something like that.

I can't see that happening, but I would've said the same thing about TSN losing national NHL rights a week ago. We'll have to wait and see.

So will TSN just pick up American feeds then and show more of the American games?

Oh yeah good point, didn't even think of that.
This deal has change the whole entire sports business landscape of this nation. Holy crap calling it a big deal isn't exaggeration at all.

TSN will probably pick up more ESPN programming. They seem to be doing well without hockey coverage.

I'd laugh if TSN doesn't release any of their guys from their contracts and PJ Stock and crew are getting a significantly larger role.

I also wouldn't be surprised if CBC and Snet share talent pretty liberally as part of this...commentators yes, but also if they can woo a guy like McKenzie, he'd be front and center on the Saturday night CBC, Sunday Night Snet (?) and likley the other day (Wed night?) national game panels.
Again, that means trickle down so the regional broadcasts get better panels and commentators.

He's talking about the American matchups games that TSN shows usually on TSN2. It'll be the NBCSN feed, but shown on TSN2.

I think TSN needs to go all in with the CFL now considering that the CFL TV audiences increased this past season. They need to somehow remain relevant to Canadians.

Ah, thanks. I imagine those would be affected? I'm not sure how that kind of sim-subbing arrangement works.
Who owns regional rights for the Leafs and Habs? RDS for Montreal, right? But aren't Leafs games shown all over the place? I could see a lot of talent staying put at TSN for coverage of the two biggest markets, even if it's regional coverage.

This just seems so weird.
TSN basically runs the NHL Network and has been a big part of the all-star games and more importantly, the draft. They're now going to lose their talent (some to retirement, some to other networks) and there will be nothing left.
Seriously, I can't help but feel this is a terrible day for hockey fans across the country.

1) Well, TSN will be limited to content and highlights they can show...certainly not enough rights to have a whole network full of programming.
2)NBCSN are the games that NBCSN shows in the States, that TSN2 usually picks up.
3)12 years is a long time. 12 years ago was 2001 and HDTV's cost $6k and showed only were useful for the next 3-4 more years for DVD's. Streaming online content like Netflix was non existent because internet speeds couldn't match, let alone mobile speeds.
But in the next 12 years? Rogers will want to have games and hockey as part of their mobile services, and they already I think have select BlueJays games available if you have a Rogers phone. 12 years from now when all sorts of usual home services will be internet based, online and home internet will be at superfast speeds, as well cellphone, tablet etc data speeds and plans.
It would only make sense that at some point, maybe not Day 1, that the NHL content would be all part of the package that Rogers has available to spit out in whatever format they wish (and makes them money).

I do see what you are saying, but there was a time when TSN didn't have national game rights and wasn't as big a part of the NHL as you describe. End of the day, all this really means for hockey fans is a potential re-branding of the coverage we already know.
The talent will eventually end up where the work is, the same types of programs will get run, the same type of coverage will happen, we might just have to select a different channel on the remote.
Rogers is looking to out bid TSN (apparently) to do the things that TSN is doing on their network, not just to stop TSN from doing it.

Giving more hockey to SN is just wrong. As mentioned above, this is a sad day for hockey fans in Canada IMO.

Welcome to The Score territory.

The Score Sportsnet360's problem isn't that they don't have broadcast rights, it's that their CRTC broadcast license limits how much live programming they're allowed to show. Of course, being a highlights chanel also cuts down on their costs.

Your an idiot. You actually want to see a 100 year old Canadian institution die for no other reason than you don't like it? I don't care if you like the CFL or not, but suggesting you would support Rogers destroying the CFL is pathetic. I hate baseball and basketball yet I don't wish or support the demise of the MLB/NBA. You are the epitomy of an American wannabe. I'm curious as to why you would like to see the CFL fold? Is it because it's not 'hip' like the NFL?

But TSN just does the production. NHL Network won't lose rights to what highlights it can or can't show.

Oh yeah, Rogers will be able to push out it's coverage to other devices and formats. I don't doubt that. But I don't see it taking anything away from NHL Gamecentre. The same blackout restrictions and conditions around national and regional rights would still apply I'm sure.

I understand people dislike Sportsnet, but how can anyone as a Flames fan be upset with them. They stepped up huge when they started broadcasting the majority of Flames games. Doesn't anyone remember how awful it was having no local Flames coverage, and having to rely on watching the opposing team's broadcast on Center Ice.
