a lot of the problems on the powerplay and the penalty kill would be solved if the Flames had a decent faceoff man or two (one of which should be Monahan in the next few years)
other than that can't fault the effort for a 1st year rebuild team... lets see if they can keep the motivation up for a whole season

EV the Flames were fine. A few bad penalties and some weak PK cost them

Same here. It was exciting to watch and they probably generated more offence than last years team or the few before that. They look hungry this year and I like that attitude so far.

Only saw the first half then skipped quicker through the rest via PVR after having to take off for an hour and a half.
3 goal lead was spotted, and Flames with a fluke 4th, but pretty even after that, halfway through the second. PP looked poor after that. Fire drills in the own Assinine penalty by Galijardi cost the team the win with 5 to go.
Looked to be playing simple hockey at the back which is all you can ask, no complaints with the defense. Forwards standing around a lot in the own zone
Was a simple game up front in the first, but after that, Flames didn't have a lot of sustained pressure. The simple plays up front in general to get the puck deep and keep it there, not sure where the blame for that lays, but the foot was taken off the gas certainly after Washington's second goal. Hitting looked like it slowed down significantly. OT got cutoff for me, as did the SO, which means that Ramo (given the breakaway goal too) is not going to be a SO specialist.
Good start I guess, but if they can't take advantage of a dreadful start by the opponents and let a 3 goal lead slip away half way through the game, may be ugly when they don't surprise and get that 3 goal lead.
Tomorrow will be tough.

Not to mention the very poor powerplays. They sapped the momentum away from the Flames imo

Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson 3m #Flames LW TJ Galiardi apologized to teammates after 5-4 SO loss to Caps. "I'm accountable for it and we'll move past it."

They had problems entering zone. Other than that they took more shots as opposed to passing it around the outside that we've seen in past years. I like they're tryng to be more creative on the PP.

This team with Kipper, Iginla, Bowmeester was arguably one of the worst Flames teams of all time under Hartley last season and next season the Flames best player is who? Cammalleri? He's not that good. Giordano? He's was terrible last year. Glencross? He's a good player but best player? Huder? Maybe sigh. Honestly I can't think of a really, really good player in this roster. We are probably the looking at the worst team in the history of the franchise.
Now that's not the end of the world though as this franchise brought it on itself and has chose the correct path out which will be a little painful in the immediate future but as long as the young talent gets good development time this team can climb back up.
|
Fair enough if you are going to stand by those words, but it's not going to be as tough as you think it is for them to be better than "worst all time"

Dissapointed with losing a 3 goal lead. But once the caps equalized it was all Flames. Very entertaining fast paced stuff from our lads tonight.
Great 1st period and last couple of minutes in the 3rd and good overtime period.
Ramo looks just as bad as kipper at shoot outs
Great effort tonight and hope to see the same all season its all we can ask for

I thought the game was winnable if the goaltending had been better. Needs to be better if we are going to have any kind of chance.

yeah not all of them would be solved but at least having a more than 1 in 4 chance of winning a face off would require less attempts at entering the zone

Outside of "pulling a Bourque", Galiardi had a pretty good game, IMO.

Yeah winning more faceoffs is a must. Hopefully in time we can count on Monahan to win those in key situations.

Truly not a bad effort, Wash is going to be a very good team this year if they get goaltending, We were beaten byone of the most dynamics scorers in the NHL. First game for Monohan and did fine, may or may not make 10 games but at least let the kid have a few games to assimilate to the NHL before shipping him back. One point is better than none and we are already on a better pace than the pundits predicted
