Good topic,
One of the only times I bought vinyl was back in maybe 1989. That day I believe I bought 2 albums and one of which is still a favorite today, I just bought it again recently in Cd format.
That album would be Stained Class by Judas Priest.
I have many other favorites including Pearl Jam 10 mentioned here, listened to that so many times, especially "The Garden". Also The Hip, I have their whole discography and Appetite which was pretty much the anthem album of my coming of age so to speak.

I change my mind quite often but this is my current favorite, based on airtime at chez jammies. I'm amazed at how many of my favorites are mentioned in this thread, too - if I was to do a top ten, the following would definitely get consideration:
Prodigy - Fat of the Land
Neil Young - Harvest
Radiohead - Kid A
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
NIN: Downward Spiral
Faith No More: The Real Thing
A couple more I really really like are David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars and Portishead: Dummy.

A ton come to mind and way too hard to pick one. The two that immediately jump to mind though, likely because of my general age when listening to each of them, would be OK Computer by Radiohead and Exit by K-os.

It would be tough to explain to a group of teenagers today, just how special the day was when a much anticipated album came out, and you didn't know what you thought already, you just went to HMV, had the joy of looking through the CD pamphlet, then put it in and just listened.
Even now a days when I preview new songs from a band I like on youtube, it's not the same. On a computer, you tend to be distracted, and if the song doesn't hook you immediately, you kind of still listen, but do other things, where as back in the day, it was just you and the CD player and for better or worse, you listened.
You may have disliked certain albums still, but back then it was because you listened to the whole thing multiple times and then decided you just weren't digging it. Now a lot of the time when people dislike an album it's because they gave a few songs a sample listening while doing whatever and didn't really feel it.

I remember my friend's mom driving us to A&B Sound in the NE and three of us buying that album. I was so amazed that I could buy a double album for like $13. I also went to see them live when they were touring for this album and it was a pretty amazing show.
There's a lot of positives to how we can consume music these days, but there's definitely a social component that can be forgotten.

Damn. My "favourite album ever" kept changing the more I read this thread. "Oooo... hadn't thought of that one.... or that one... no that one is even better".
Some that come to mind that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

this made me laugh cuz I remember doing that with tapes and records, I also remember taping songs of the radio if that was the only song you liked.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell - I or II - take your pick.
Goo Goo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo - a little edgier back then than they've become now.

Their best album, kind of surprised it took this long to see a Nirvana album on this list, when I was mulling over which album to post I considered this and unplugged in New York
