Sliver's worst nightmare
Quote:
As many as 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets and vacant homes of bankrupt Detroit, replacing residents, menacing humans who remain and overwhelming the city’s ability to find them homes or peaceful deaths.
Dens of as many as 20 canines have been found in boarded-up homes in the community of about 700,000 that once pulsed with 1.8 million people. One officer in the Police Department's skeleton animal-control unit recalled a pack splashing away in a basement that flooded when thieves ripped out water pipes.
“The dogs were having a pool party,” said Lapez Moore, 30. “We went in and fished them out.”
Poverty roils the Motor City and many dogs have been left to fend for themselves, abandoned by owners who are financially stressed or unaware of proper care. Strays have killed pets, bitten mail carriers and clogged the animal shelter, where more than 70 percent are euthanized.
“With these large open expanses with vacant homes, it’s as if you designed a situation that causes dog problems,” said Harry Ward, head of animal control.

evacuate the city, relocate everyone to other cities, and flatten it.
Or have the mayor secretly burn the city down and claim the insurance.

In an interesting turn of events it seems as though other major US cities, chiefly Dallas, are attempting to poach remaining Detroit Police Officers.
As it stands right now 911 response time in Detroit is hovering at about 58 minutes with the police force they currently have.
I have advocated the construction of a large arena but thus far the name 'Thunderdome' has yet to stick.

We watched the news article last night on the Detriot station. The Detriot salary tops off at $49,000 or so a year, Dallas start @ $46,000.
They mentioned that the average officer is much more seasoned in Detriot than Dallas.
Not hard to see why they would walk away.

Easier work, nicer weather, better pay and a pension that isnt under severe threat. Not hard to see at all.
I think we watched the same news program. The thing that stuck out to me more than the 58 minute response time was the fact that Detroit's caretaker isnt even talking about incentives to retain the police until they agree to a new contract.
Now...I may not be some fancy 'Big-City Bankruptcy Trustee' but I can tell y'all that ain't no one signing that there contract.
Likely because they'll be too busy waving the finger at you on their way out of town and there wont be anyone left to sign the stupid contract.

Ya, this is an example of where I would understand why someone needs to carry a gun for protection.

Thats about entry-level pay here. The ceiling is a lot higher. And at the same time Calgary Police dont really have to deal with 'Detroit-level' crime.
I could not imagine being a Police officer in Detroit for that kind of crap pay. I would not put up with that.
