It's the over the top talk of how terrible he is that just makes some of you look bad. It's not a pot shot. It's the truth. Before Butler it was Bouwmeester, Stajan etc. It's fair game to criticize all players on the team but when you go overboard it's just silly and makes us look bad.

I for one am not that anti-Butler. I would prefer having other defenders on the team, as I just don't see any upside. I don't have a problem at all with you liking Butler's game - it was how you worded it that seemed fairly 'trollish' - the "If you don't agree with me, then you are an idiot" kind of post that baits other posters in coming back over the top.
I don't mind Butler on the bottom pairing. He doesn't annoy me like some others. However, there are many players in the history of the organization that polarize fans into the 'love' and 'hate' group. Just because you are one side, does not mean the other side are morons for not liking him. I really didn't have any problem with the idea behind your post - just how it comes off.

You might be right - I was skimming through this thread trying to get some work done, and I might have missed where that was initially brought up. If true, then whomever wrote that was just as 'trollish' in my opinion. Doesn't matter what side it is from - I feel it is just over the top.
This is a hockey discussion forum where we provide opinions back and forth. Some players like Butler (and even Regehr, Iginla, etc.,) can be polarizing - but to talk down to posters like that I feel is just a bit much, especially when you can make good cases for both sides.

Butler is not a top pairing defenseman by any stretch, but he is certainly better than 6/7; especially on this Flames team.

Lol did you read the post I was replying to? I can't believe that it went over people's heads that I was just throwing EE's arrogance back in his face.

Butler is okay and can fill in on any pairing but he doesn't do anything particularly good or terrible. Fine as a 6th or 7th defenceman.
As for Brodie, I think that at the end of the season he was our best defenceman. He was quick into the corners and quick to get the puck out to one of our forwards. Their was very little cycling while he was on the ice. We need to find him a partner and I think he's worth a $2.5M per contract.

Pretty much, then through in the record tying game in Boston and it's created the perfect storm

No. Still plenty of time. My guess is he signs a $2.25/yr deal for 2 seasons.

It would be nice if this got done ... obviously it will, but the longer it goes the more chance for animosity, however slim.

That game was analyzed and explained goal by goal but for some stats trump analysis. This guy was as much a victim of his opponent, D partner (s), and circumstance as anything. Sittler's 10 point game is a noteworth achievement too.
Butler is not expected to be a top pairing stalwart, more so serviceable. It has everything to do with the outbound player and unrealistic expectations.

Those were expectations placed on him by Feaster and a role given to him by Sutter. At the time of the trade, most posters here expected him to be nothing more than a bottom pairing defenseman.

Maybe the deal is done and they are just trickling the NFC out, save the best for last. That's what I am telling myself anyway.

Maybe Brodie holds out like Subban did last season. It will give a couple of our other young guys a better look in the NHL.

Powerplay Quarterback

3 year/$6sih is definitely justified for Brodie, he has proven that he is capable, so pay him as such.
I don't think it looks good, to not commit after the season he has had. The youth coming in, have to see the pay off for hard work.
Brodie has developed into a serviceable top 4 d-man, I'm not sure why we should be afraid to commit long term.
