I can't remember where I read this, my quick search isn't finding it again, but I'm sure from the CVR of Asiana the pilots both discussed and understood a 137 kt approach speed. Discussing is fine and all, but it still comes down to skill, and they still let the plane get far below 137.

It looks like a Korean news agency is having some fun at KTVU’s expense. After the landing gear failure of the Southwest flight at LGA they showed this graphic with American pilot names “Captain Kent Parker Wright”, “Co-Captain Wyatt Wooden Workman”.
They even went as far as making up fake names for people to interview. Flight instructor “Heywood U. Flye-Moore” and skeptical passenger “Macy Lawyers”.

Apparently that's some kind of Korean version of The Onion. So, not really real.

It would be great if it was real though.

I would much rather have liked to have seen the headline "Foreign Airlines Training Pilots in Visual Landings after SFO Accident".

But I guess the GPS approaches are a start.

I just don't get it, what kind of pilot doesn't want to fly his/her plane? Yes the automation makes things much easier, but doesn't that same automation make it much easier to grab the yoke/stick and fly the thing yourself too?

You just spent 10+ hours crossing the Pacific with the autopilot on, I'd be itching to fly the plane that last little bit on a clear blue sky day.

Are we still "love of flight" pilots in North America and Europe, and for some of the Asian carriers the pilots are just doing it as a job (definitely not all)?

I know a guy who works for Korean Air Cargo in Vienna. He doesn't have a lot of nice things to say about the pilots.

I'm not really that adept in the RNAV/GPS thing, but what type of accuracy do they have on elevation and thus the glideslope? I know with commercial GPS, the elevation is crappy and needs to be corrected.

The elevation/vertical component of it would still be done with the barometric altimeter/radio altimeter. Here's the GPS approach to 28L at SFO.
