I asked this before and got a no. So take that for what it's worth.

IIRC cap recapture is for contracts over 6 years in length.

I had the opportunity to sit in row three of the lower bowl at the 'Dome (never had this chance before) to see Mikka play his last game vs. Anaheim. I'm glad I could be a part of that event.

There it is. Knew I was forgetting something that made his contract exempt from this penalty.

Thanks.

I thought there was a rule if you signed like a 40 year old player for 5 year contract, you'll be on the hook for the entire time even if he retire at 41

Yeap there is. It's a 35+ contract. Sign a player to one of these and your on the hook for his entire cap hit even if he retires before it expires.

Cap recapture is different, its set up to penalize teams for front loading contracts and lowering the overall cap hit by adding years at the end with a very low salary.

Flames statement:

Quote:
“As we indicated when we addressed the media on June 14th, having just spoken with Miikka at that time, we realized that if pushed for an answer Miikka would have said that he was finished with his professional career. In light of our most recent meeting with him, the statement attributed to him by the Finnish National Team does not come as a surprise. However, as we have said consistently, we will continue our dialogue with Miikka.”

Cap Recapture does not apply to 35+ contracts, because the old 35+ rules from the previous CBA got carried forward, which are already stronger than the cap recapture rules.

Under the new rules, the cap recapture clause will let teams have a player retire, and only have a salary cap hit of roughly the difference between the Salary and the cap hit (gives a rough number anyway). Under a 35+ contract, the team is on the hook for the full cap hit until the end of the contract no matter what.

There aren't too many contracts that would fit both criteria anyway, as there aren't too many players signed for at least 7 years that signed the contract when they were older than 35.

Sounds like Feaster knows the answer, he's just dodging reality... he really isn't the right guy for a rebuild. He would rather plug his ears and say "not happening, not happening, not happening"

From the statement, to me, it sounds like the Flames really don't know what's going on for sure. They think he will be retiring but he has let the official word slip to Finnish media before Feaster and co. and now they are playing catch up.

I read it as more "We're leaving the door open for Kiprusoff if he wants to join the Blue Jackets".

They can't say he's retired yet since he could want to play and be traded to Columbus, but that they're aware of his most recent comments.

Or 'until the paperwork is filed, we have to proceed like he could come back'.
