Town of High River Asking For Assistance.

High River RCMP are requesting assistance from any members of the public who own a marine boat suitable for use in the flood evacuation efforts.

If you are able to help them, please contact their office at 403-652-2357 or the Town at 403.652.6960.

Volunteers are also required to help sandbag houses in affected areas.

Please share this message.

My parents live in Exshaw and are currently without power & water. They are also unable to leave to get supplies as the bridge is completely washed out to get to the store or the highway.

Scary stuff.

10:16 a.m., June 20, 2013 Pursuant to Section 21 of the Emergency Management Act (R.S.A. 2000 Ch. D-13) and Section 4 of The City of Calgary Bylaw 25M2002, a State of Local Emergency (SOLE) has been declared in The City of Calgary effective 1016h, June 20, 2013.

The decision was made by Deputy Mayor Richard Pootmans and Ald. John Mar to declare a SOLE based on the potential severity of the incoming high river flows in conjunction with expected heavy rainfall.

The City of Calgary has begun to implement its flood response plans with the deployment of sandbags and temporary dams at key locations to protect property and infrastructure. The City is working to ensure the safety of Calgarians and asks for their patience and cooperation during this time.

Citizens are reminded to:

  • Stay away from rivers and creeks as the water is rising and moving quickly, and banks may be unstable.
  • Avoid storm water ponds and storm drains, and do not let children play near them.
  • Do not drive through flooded areas such as underpasses.
  • If you experience basement seepage or overland flooding, call 3-1-1 to report.
  • If you or someone else is in imminent danger, call 9-1-1. Remember that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only; please use 3-1-1 for reporting non-emergency issues.
  • Monitor local media and City of Calgary messages.
For more information on flooding, please visit calgary.ca/flooding.

The City continues to monitor flows and precipitation and will take appropriate action as required. Updates will be provided throughout the day.

Municipal Emergency Plan Activated in anticipation of heavy rains and high river flow
8:28 a.m., June 20, 2013

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2013 the Municipal Emergency Plan (MEP) was activated and the Emergency Operations Centre opened.

This decision was made due to the anticipated heavy rains and flows on the Elbow and Bow Rivers throughout the day and into tomorrow which may have an impact on The City of Calgary.

Citizens are reminded to:

  • Stay away from rivers and creeks as the water is rising and moving quickly, and banks may be unstable.
  • Avoid storm water ponds and storm drains, and do not let children play near them.
  • Do not drive through flooded areas such as underpasses. If you experience basement seepage or overland flooding, call 3-1-1 to report.
  • If you or someone else is in imminent danger, call 9-1-1. Remember that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only; please use 3-1-1 for reporting non-emergency issues.
  • Monitor local media and City of Calgary messages.
The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) and its partners are continuing to assess the situation and will provide updates.

It's not a pipeline. A well right next to the river had it's flow line snapped by a tree floating down the now flooded river bank. Gas/H2S out of the well to atmosphere.

Thank you for this update! Until your post, that's all I've heard aside from the update at the top of the noon hour on Global. Mum and uncle live almost at the top of Sunset Blvd, so their house is safe, they would have just been affected by the sour gas leak.

Can't they just ghost town High River? I am guessing there will be another tens of millions in government aid, and in 3 years it will happen all over again, and again, and again.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy all of the owners out that live in high risk flood-able areas, make it a provincial park or something, and relocate them elsewhere?

It seems so frikkin stupid we go through these catastrophic, yet entirely predictable floods with that city every few years.

It's sadly ironic. People buy/build houses by the river in a town that is named High River & floods every few years...badly. I don't get it.

What's the population of High River? I don't know much about it...

There are flood prone areas of high river, and non flood prone areas. Seems to me even the areas that don't flood are flooding now.

I've just heard through a friend that the hospital has flooded.
