Let's say this crazy scenario happens - Top 5 are MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm. Falls to the Flames at 6 with Jones and Nichuskin available. What do you do?

You say "typical" and call yourself a Flames fan. If MacKinnion, Barkov, Monahan, AND Lindholm go in the top 5, I would take Jones and then do what is necessary to get Lazar.

Flames need elite players at every position. Center, RW and Defense especially. If Jones by some miracle drops down to 6, Feaster will run up there and before he announces Jones' name, he goes on all fours and kisses the ground first.

Sprint to the podium and grab Jones. We're as weak on top 3 d-man as we are at centre.

I am not a fan of Jones with the number 1 pick but if he is there at 6 it is a no brainier to take him.
Doubtful that he gets past TB or Carolina or there isn't a trade up to get him.
If he is there at 4 and Edmonton doesn't offer one of their young forwards and 7 for him they are idiots (which means it probably doesn't happen.)

I definitely see this happening, i can see Jones falling to four and the oilers jumping all over it.

Jones doesnt get past Carolina, I can see Colorado, Tampa and Florida passing on Jones and taking Barkov, Mac, and Druin but there is no way he falls past 4 when Carolina doesn't need a center and the available ones are the 2nd tier in the draft, and Nishkinun is a risk and Carolina has a terrible defense.

I think Darnell Nurse develops into a better all round NHL D man than Jones.

Any reasons for that?
A lot of outlandish statements falling on, who most respected analysts and scouts consider, the concensus #1 pick.

I can't say I blame COL for skipping Jones to take, say, MacKinnon. MacKinnon made Jones look like a play toy out there are several occasions during the Mem Cup.
I wasn't impressed one bit with Jones during that tournament. However, and probably more importantly, I was very impressed with him during the WJC. It took him a few games, but once he got started he looked good.
Florida has an aging, crap defense, so there's no way Florida doesn't take Jones.

Like i posted in another thread, i have heard from a reliable source that Dale Tallon isn't that impressed with Jones, wouldn't surprise me at all if they pass on him at 2.

I hope this whole reordering of things causes a team that would potentially take Barkov to take Jones instead.
But tbh, I'd take Jones in a second if he made it to us.
I think these 'analysts' are making too much out of a few games in the memorial cup tourney, which was basically an all-star tournament at the junior level. And in those sorts of games, d-men tend to become non factors.

If Colorado picks MacKinnon instead of Jones with the #1 selection I see the following scenario taking place...
Florida takes Droiun at #2
Tampa Bay has Seth Jones fall into their lap at #3
Nashville select Barkov at #4
Carolina picks Monahan at #5
...which leaves the choice of either Lindholm, Nichuskin or defenceman Darnell Nurse for the Flames at #6.
In this scenario which of the three should the Flames select??

That situation won't happen, as I feel that if the Flames know that Carolina is set on Monahan, they'll move heaven and earth to get them or Nashville to swap. With the resources at our disposal, Feaster and co. won't settle for a player not high on their list. When the smart thing might be to draft Linholm and keep all picks, I see them jumping the gun and throwing out some offers too good for nsh/car to refuse.

Lindholm. Have to address the centre position. Have to.

It's my undertanding that the brand of center that Lindholm plays in the SEL is different than what Monahan played here in north america. He only took 60-some odd faceoffs all season, apparently plays wing in certain situations. Kind of like what was going on with Cervenka. I think this has a factor in management's preference, and they would in turn do what it takes to get in position to take Monahan, if Barkov is out of reach.

Nichuskin. Not that sold on Lindholm and now that he has made his intentions clear I think you have to take the Russian. So what if he is not a C, he could very well be the best player in this draft. We need help in all areas, take the BPA.

There is going to be a lot of jockying for position now that this news has come out. My guess is somehow the avs move down to third and take whomever is left out of the mackinnon, drouin and jones.

Not surprised at all by this story. Much has been made about the Jones/Colorado connection but the draft is about business and selecting the best player available. Defenseman are a long term selection, most often they take years to develop into their potential. Not unlike goalies, d-man are a riskier pick, historical data indicates taking a forward pays quicker dividends and the odds of that player meeting high expectations much greater. The Av's hold all the cards, speculation that they may be bluffing makes little sense to me. Why would they ....?
