If it's not Pittsburgh on a cheap deal, I would say one of the California teams (specifically LA or San Jose).

My guess is either Chicago or LA.

I would add Anaheim to that list too.

Sure wouldn't mind living it up in Cali for a bit myself with his salary.

(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,902,727; BONUSES: $135,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $532,273
so this is your team without Iginla... they have about $3M left if they are totally able to get rid of Willie Mitchell's contract..... (Ie Buyout)
Just used Irving as a generic 1M backup goalie.
so this team gets rid of Scuderi, Penner, Richardson and Bernier and replaces with Iginla and is right at the cap IF Iginla signs for 3M.
They wouldn't be the Flames best moves in years at 1.6M for and a 3rd round pick?? What do you think the Flames will be paying RFA Backlund this coming year? Let him walk for less than 1.6M and cash in on the 3rd rounder? All of these guys have a better resume to-date and as much potential as Backlund.
This also assumes they can sign Voynov to a 3.3M deal.... (or lose to an offer sheet and get back a 2nd round pick) He likely would want somewhat more.... on a longer term...
If you are Ottawa and have the cap space: Offer 5M over 4 years to Voynov costing a 1st and a 3rd or Iginla for 4M as a UFA?
Either way LA will not be able to commit any reasonable offer to Iginla until they have Vonyov, Muzzin, Martinez, Lewis and Clifford in case they are forced to match.
|
No way LA lets Voynov sign anywhere else. They'd match for sure. He was their best defenceman for most of the year.
I could see Iggy taking a minimal short term contract with a contender for a chance at the cup (he doesn't need the extra money). $2M to $3M for 1 to 2 years with Pitt or LA. Not sure if Boston would still interested. Can't see him going to Det. They're barely a playoff team at this point and not really a cup contender. The only contender they match up well with is Chicago.

The fact that he is no longer a 30+ goal scorer and is getting old is what shaved that money off his next deal. Leaving Calgary has nothing to do with it, as the Flames wouldn't have paid him $7 mil next year either.

Iginla re-signs in Pittsburgh, plays a full season on Crosby's wing, under Vignault, scores 40 plus 20 in the playoffs and wins it all, Ray Bourque-style.

Maybe the Iggy of 6-7 years ago, but not the current Iggy. He doesn't have legs to play on a wing with Crosby.

"Maybe" 6-7 years ago?
When the guy was scoring 50 goals and putting up 90+ points?
Hell, the guy scored 40+ two seasons ago.
Honestly, Iginla isn't the player he was, that's totally normal for a player his age but it's hilarious watching some of you keep bending and skewing the timelines to fit your narrative.

Oh, stop it you "Iggy lover". Why do you think he was left off the 2010 Canadian Olympic team? If they selected him, he would have held the team back, and certainly if by some odd chance he was on the ice at the same time as Crosby (like the middle of a line change) he would never connect with Crosby in any meaningful way.

I don't see any of the big time contenders having money to sign him. If Selanne is done in Anaheim, maybe, but they just committed big raises to Getzlaf and Perry. Other than that, Colorado, Columbus, Nashville, Winnipeg, Ottawa are the teams who would be able to best afford him. But Columbus and Nashville will clash too much style wise.
Will be interesting to see where he ends up. It will be a tough transition going from being the man to going elsewhere we he will be another player, which is what will be offered to him.

I can see ANA signing Iggy to replace Selanne on their 2nd line RW

Don't know about 40 goals? I could see Iggy getting close to 35 goals with 2 teams. One is Pitt if they have a new coach and the other is playing with the Sisters in Vanccouver.
Granted if he goes to Vancouver he will be out of the playoffs in the first round. If he stays in Pitt and does not change his defensive game for the playoffs, i could see him being demoted to the 3rd line again.

No longer. 11 years or however many straight, then this year with lockout, coaching change, ridiculously soft roster, and trade, then the adjustment to something entirely new, playing the off wing, and he is now not even in the 30 goal conversation. Technically not achieving or on pace for 30 this year, but Crosby was out for all but a couple of minutes regular season and Malkin missed a pile of games.
This season is now the past. He may have hurt his paycheque in some eyes, but 11 pts in 13 plus point per game in playoffs until the entire team, best player in the world included, pulled up lame. If we are basing market value on the last series, only Vokoun is worthy of a multimillion dollar deal.

Contracts are based on what a player can do for a team in the future, not what he did for a team in past. Iginla has proven that he can score, but he has also proven to be a handful to coach and a difficult player to find guys to play with. He plays his game, even when it flies in the face of what the coach wants from the team. Iggy is no longer a first line player. He's lost a step and it shows. Iginla is more of a second line guy, if you have players that will cover his defensive responsibilities for him. It will be interesting to see where he shakes out. I think the best bet is Edmonton. They have the need and the money to pay him. They are also not afraid to let players do their own thing. Seems like the best fit. Will be interested to see how the fan club reacts if he signs there.

Iginla has always been a money player. I don't see anything about his past behaviour that would lead me to believe that he will take less money just to get the best chance to win a Cup. All things being equal, he will probably take the best team (like who wouldn't), but make no mistake, he is all business. He won't take a substantially smaller salary for a top contender.

Watching him play in the playoffs, he's going to have to take less money wherever he signs.
