I have mentioned this on CP previously, an insurance broker friend has told me to shop around your car and home insurances every few years, similar to you shopping around for cell phone plans. Often companies will offer new acquisition discounts for customers to switch over from their competitors.

Let me know what you find through a broker. SquareOne seems like the best coverage at reasonable rates in contrast to TD. Anyone a current customer who has claims experience with them?

I just got a quote and essentially same as what TD is proposing.

Not with SquareOne, but I had a home insurance claim with TD. Awful experience, but I was stubborn enough that they did eventually pay me my independent contractor's quote in full. This year they jacked up my rate with some bull about how their underwriters require a higher level of insurance due to increasing costs. Unfortunately, when I tried to shop it around a little, they still came in significantly cheaper.

Reviving this thread...
Just got the annual notice of UOP (unauthorized orifice penetration) insurance rate increase from TD Meloche. OMFG. Over the past 2-3 years it's gone up a ridiculous amount, not to mention the monthly automatic pay "convenience" charge of nearly $8/monthly.
Soooo... am looking for recommendations on where to go for home and auto insurance.

I finally ditched TD Meloche last year for similar reasons. Couldn't get screwed any worse by those aholes. Ended up going with the Personal for a lot less, and they have a special rate for professional associations also.

Thanks IH. I looked at them online too and have set up an appointment. The "good" thing about TDMeloche is how online you can drill down through all the separate line items and premiums. I discovered some premiums that seem to have crept into there, and some unexpected large/unnecessary ones such as a "$3 Million Solution"... which we certainly don't need I don't think... not for $2100/yr their description being:

Your $3 MILLION SOLUTION® is a single flexible coverage amount of $3 million that gives you the financial flexibility to ensure you have enough coverage to help get your life back to normal, in the event of a claim. Here's what it includes coverage for.
  • Your home, as well as any outbuildings or detached structures on your property (e.g. backyard shed, detached garage, etc.)
  • Your belongings that are located in your home, as well as some of your belongings located in other outbuildings or detached structures on your property
  • Additional living expenses, if you need to temporarily move out of your home while it is being repaired or rebuilt due to a loss that's covered by your policy
  • Temporary off-site storage, if your home is damaged and you need to take your belongings out of your home
  • Debris removal, emergency clean-up costs and decontamination services
  • Rebuilding expenses associated with new by-laws

We moved home and auto to Bélair Direct. Saved $850 a year and customer service is better.

Yeah Intact did the same to me. Plopped in useless riders or expanded coverage greatly on existing coverage.

They were significantly cheaper for the vehicles but still were higher for the home.

I've been with TD Meloche for quite a while, my home insurance has gone up is small but steady increments from $94.33 around 8 years ago to $166.06 this month. F'inmg crooks.

Time to start calling around.

I think the reason why we have such an increase in home insurance this year is because we are paying for the hail damage to the NW from last year, plus the usual "we can charge any amount we want" BS

Insurance never ever goes down.

Massive storms like this August don't help, but insurance only goes down if you change companies.

Definitely. They gave the apega discount but have quietly removed that and now are just the crappy TD bank of uselessness

We are also ditching them. Did a quote with Bélair, matched td Meloche coverage and it’s coming out 3600 less a year. What the everloving f***

I switched from TD to Wawanesa.. many of the other ones wouldn't do flood coverage for me in Chestermere. Saving a huge $$.

Their car coverage though isn't that competitive price wise so later this year I'm going to shop around and see if it makes sense to switch even if I lose the bulk discount.
