Yeah it's funny how many of the better characters were introduced in the later seasons when the show had already peaked.
Alpert (Season 3), Juliet (Season 3), Mr. Eko (Season 2), Faraday (Season 4), Desmond (Season 2), Ben (Season 2), and a couple others were all introduced after the first season and yet all of them added great depth to the cast (which was already stellar to begin with). I'd say Desmond became my favorite character after Locke "died" in season 4.
The last season, and the ending in particular was horrific as Yamer said, but overall I find the show to be quite good. I am not sure there is a drama out there that was as good as the first two (and parts of the third) seasons of Lost. Even the fourth and fifth seasons were interesting for the most part, and gave us a few more great episodes, and I did like how they used flash-forwards for the most part.
Then came season six, which I hate even acknowledging. It wasn't that bad on first viewing, but as a whole it was just a bad ending. The episodes in the beginning (in the village) essentially amounted to nothing, the relationship between MIB and Jacob ended up being a disappointment (their final confrontation sucked as well), and the ending was most definitely a cop-out. I did however love the ending with the plane taking off while Jack dies in the same place he woke up on the island at the start of the series. Some may not have liked the symmetry in that scene, but I still cried when it ended that way.
It's hard to view a show like Lost by its parts rather than the summation of those parts, but I find myself doing that whenever I rewatch the series. So it still remains one of the better shows I have ever seen.
Edit: Oh and I am still pissed at how they handled Walt's storyline. I can't believe how they failed to find a proper resolution to perhaps the best twist in television history. I think they mishandled the ending of season one, when the others kidnapped Walt worse than the finalie.
