If you say the Flames should be a consistent playoff participant then I'll agree with you, some tweaks need to be made. But there are no 'championship' calibre teams. Playoff positioning no longer matters, just get in.
The Flames could just as easily win or lose in the 1st round as much as Chicago could easily win or lose in the first round (ir)regardless of who either of them play.
Look at the stupid Oilers. Blow it up and rebuild with 3 first overall picks and they are nowhere near getting into the crapshoot. Full rebuild in a cap system is really dumb.

The Calgary flames are not made for playoff hockey. They are way to soft and will be blown away if they did make the playoffs.
I watched Chicago vs Detroit game a couple of weeks back and there were more body checks in the last 5 minutes of that game , than Calgary could do in 2 games.

I just think that the hockey playoffs are a crapshoot and no matter how good a team looks, they could easily lose in the 1st round and who ever looks awful and sneaks in could make a run.
This isn't the NBA where the 8th seed will get torched by the Heat in 4 straight automatically and then it's a Heat coronation to the finals. In the NHL all first round series are insanely competitive.

The thing is that the team who sneaks in can make a run, but they never win (The LA Kings were a extremely talented, well-touted team who was going through a slump, not an also-ran who got in) No other real 8th place team has ever won jack.
We need to start build a team that can win, not a team that every decade may have a chance of going somewhere if they pin their hopes on dumb luck, adrenaline, and gee-whiz optimism.

So I have to blindly cheer for everything to be considered a fan now? Reality has no place within these walls?

Sure but then no team has met your criteria. There are no teams that can win in this NHL.
No team can make the final four two years in a row. I believe that in the last 3 playoffs, only Philly has made the 2nd round all 3 years.

I get your point, but 7 years is a long time for nothing to happen.

What criteria? I said no 8th place team can win.
You really don't see LA, Boston, Chicago having the chance to go all the way again? There are never any guarantees, but the Kings make teams like us look a like a bunch of pipsqueaks. With their size and Sutter behind the bench, I think they are a hell of a contender. As for Chicago, I'm pretty sure Patrick Kane alone could take us out of the 1st round.
You seem to equate Championship team with winning 3 cups in a row or something. Trust me, nobody in LA gives a crap that they are not considered a "Championship" team by you. They have their Stanley Cup, and that beats every other 8th place teams efforts combined.

Question: I've seen this "division title" thing in a couple of recent PGT's on here. As a non-flames fan I am curious. Are flames fans really of the view that the division title is now the goal, and a realistic possibility? Or is that just tongue in cheek?

Now that we have a commanding lead on the Oilers we can look down at their pathetic franchise again.
Flames go for 3 in a row on Monday, that will be a first all year if it can happen.

It's a bit tongue and cheek because Cuthbert mentioned it on TSN. I believe he was quoting Hartley.
But if you look at it objectively, which is easier? 4 points behind 8th but having to jump 5 teams or 6 points out of 1st in the division having to jump only 2 teams.
Plus we play in the division more, 2 more against Canucks and Wild and 3 more against Oilers IIRC.

Hopefully management recognizes this isn't quite yet a championship team, but man do these wins demonstrate that we may not be as far out as some people imagine.
A few tweaks here and there at this years deadline may risk our opportunity for a playoff berth this year, but spell a greater team next year. Hopefully they do the right thing
But more importantly: WHOOOOOOO!!!!

I found myself over and over last night trying to envision what this team would look like if they traded Iginla. And the conclusion I kept arriving at was that if you traded Iggy for picks and prospects, and inserted Baertschi onto the team, that it really wouldn't look significantly different (from a results perspective).
My opinion on the Iginla issue iis that the strain of it all just becomes too much at some point. I think he will move simply because he understands that this will go on (and get worse) every year if he stays. At some point you simply accept it as fate.
And watching last night, I really didn't think that trading him would impact their playoff chances all that much.
Unfortunately, the thought of being in the playoffs and Iginla not being here, isn't a very pleasant thought.

Lord when did the flames fans turn into leaf fans... 20 years I spent in that city, watched first hand the same desperate "omg" acts when that team won more than 2 in a row. We're better than that.
This team needs to be better than that.
As always, this is the same method of operation that happens every year.... False starts, missed early chances, then the absolute push to try to make it, everyone gets excited and starts believing again, then the dial shows E in the tank when we need it the most, and they crash and burn.
Been there done that.
Now I'm in the show me before I invest type of mood.
Being a fan since 1980, I've seen every version of this team. Whats there now is a shadow. It's the no name brand version of what I want to continue cheering for.
I do not believe in this team, I do not trust the management of this team, I do not believe in the owners of the team. Too many years of disappointment.
Patience? My ass. I'm now in the zone of dont care. And I used to be insanely in love with the team, for decades.....

I've just gotten to the point where I get excited and cheer when they win and look at the schedule and standings to try and figure out a way for them to leapfrog some teams (while trying to be somewhat realistic).
When they lose, I feel disappointed and start looking up draft eligible prospect profiles.
Basically, they have done this too many times for me to really invest either way. That being said, fun to watch them make those skilled plays last night.
