It will be a bad deal one day, but most long term contracts are. Langkow's deal was a steal early on, bad in its last year; same will be with Brad Richards, same will be with Parise, etc etc etc.
|
The trend towards these long term deals is still in it's infancy and four to five years down the road we are likely going to see a lot of teams having to deal with the fallout of these deals as I expect there are going to be more than a few of these guys that won't be playing remotely close to their pay level at the last 1/4 of these deals. I actually feel pretty good that the Flames don't have anyone tied up to one of these deals as they likely will cost some teams the services of their top young players when they are eligible for free agency. Oilers in particular picking first overall year after year are going to have an impossible time keeping that team together.

Pretty common knowledge that the deal the Flames offered the Richards' camp was near identical to the deal he signed with the rangers.
Quote:
Flames general manager Jay Feaster was the GM of the Lightning when Richards was there and there's no question that Feaster put together a package that had Richards thinking very long and hard about the option of maybe going to the Flames. The deal is believed to be in the same sort of financial neighbourhood as the Rangers' offer - maybe up around nine years at $64 million.

In addition to the Rangers, the Buffalo Sabres, Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings offered Richards similarly structured contracts on July 1.

On Saturday, Richards announced his decision: he will sign with the Rangers for nine years and $60 million. The deal reunites Richards with John Tortorella, his coach at Tampa Bay when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, and gives the Rangers the elite center they have sought to set up their top sniper, Marian Gaborik.
Richards, 31, chose the Rangers over the Kings, who made an offer believed to be slightly higher than the Rangers’. The Toronto Maple Leafs, the Calgary Flames (who reportedly offered $65 million for nine years) and the Philadelphia Flyers were also among the teams whose offers Richards slept on overnight. Sather said Richards “left a lot of money on the table” in choosing the Rangers.

Don't look like anything but rumors and thoughts. Nothing concrete whatsoever. None of us know exactly what Feaster offered.
Though full marks for coming to timbit's rescue again. Don't think the guy has ever withstood a debate without sheepishly stepping away and letting someone else do his typing.

mad amount of money. Perry should hit UFA with that cap hit.
I am bit puzzled about the 8 years though. I could have sworn the new CBA was a 7 year max on contracts. So how were the Ducks able to do this?

It was 5/7 leading up to the MOU but the owners gave a 6/8 concession at the end.

Yes, because he is taking back what Anaheim owes him to be really honest, he's always been under paid in Anaheim, and they know it, that's why he's getting paid "good" now.

If I was the Ducks I'd l be looking to gt Perry locked up as well, and then move Bobby Ryan this summer for a sweet return to alleviate any cap/budget concerns.

Cap is going down next year to about $60M right? $8.25M cap hit is too high IMO

Yup though I think we did dodge a bullet with Brad Richards. The key for the Flames is not to commit to any of these types of contracts until they have a core base to build on, then supplement with UFA's later.

Doesn't the amount scale with the cap? So 8.25 is based off the 60M cap.

Rock and a hard place for the Ducks. They are having success this year and can't move both of Getzlaf or Perry (and really likely not either of them) without sinking hopes of playoff success. Or at least it would be difficult to do so. They also can't go into the deadline with him unsigned and potentially lose such a valuable asset for nothing. Add in the lack of throw away years on contracts and what you have is a shocking number at first but one that is understandable. Ducks needed to throw money at him and the lack of throw away years and limited term means the number is going to be high.
They'll do the same for Perry and in the summer likely move Ryan and perhaps save some money in the crease by moving Hiller.

Iggy signed for 5 years 35 mil when the cap was 42ish. That is a far higher % than getzlaf.
Reasonable number for the ducks. Would have gotten max as a free agent

Here is the breakdown of Ryan Getzlaf's extension: $6.5M next year then $8.75M, $9.25M, $9.25M, $9.025M, $8.95M, $8.275M and $6M.
