Ford and Porsche both use systems to pipe in the actual engine noise to the cabin. BMW replicates the engine noise through the stereo.
Many car companies use a form of resonator to pump engine noise into the cabin.

BMW has really lost their way in the past 5 or so years. They used to be a defacto 'want' car and now the only one that truly excites me is the 1M.

That 1M is definitely an awesome car. Too bad it was only a 1-year run.

M3 and M5 are still the benchmarks. If only the Corvette could be more like them!

Agree to disagree then, to me 'fake' is 'synthesized' versus amplifying the actual engine sound that is there.

Important to note, the exhaust nor the turbos are amplified. It's just the noise of the engine that is getting amplified.

In any case, my car doesn't do it so I'm happy. And since I do want a little more turbo noise in my cabin, I'm putting downpipes and an intake on my car. Happy Festivus to me.

A MotorTrend discussion of the new vette

While I like the new Stingray, I was watching the vid for the C63 AMG 507 Wagon. I want one soooo bad - complete BS that we can't get them here.

That's cause they are ladies cars.

A Porsche engineer wouldn't care if you think the car sounds awful. It sounds that way, because that is the most purposeful no compromise sound the car can generate. That is the whole ideal with Porsche. Functional design and performance trumps all else.
