What a crazy day and night.

Jamaican Queens (from Detroit) were awesome. Met them after and bought the CD. They are supposed to play Friday and Saturday night too.

Went to Flames Central show - Superchunk were really good, but the whole night was very surreal. How many bands is Danny Vacon in? #enoughalready

I don't know what the flood means for the rest of the festival.

http://www.sledisland.com/slog/2013/...d-updates-come

Dear Sled Island festival goers. Today we, like many Calgarians, were hit by some unexpected events. Neighbourhood evacuations in Calgary, including our office and many of our festival venues, along with road closures outside of Calgary, caused a number of show cancellations and/or last-minute moves. We have been humbled by the positivity and understanding of crowds, the go-with-it attitude of our artists and inspired by our partners' initiative to make tonight roll as smoothly and as close to as scheduled as possible.

We have received tons of questions about our plans for the weekend. We are in close discussions with city officials and have every intention of getting the word out as soon as we know what is and is not possible for the remainder of the weekend. We expect to have a lot more information by Friday morning.

Festival-goers and artists' experience and safety are of primary importance to us, so we want to ensure that the weekend's plans are respectful of both of those things.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your patience, understanding and continued support. Let's get through this together!

Stay tuned to Sled Island updates at @sledisland and on-line at our website www.sledisland.com

Sled Island 2013 - All Remaining Events Cancelled

In light of the current emergency situation, and in line with our commitment to the safety of festival-goers and the citizens of Calgary, all reamining Sled Island festival events are cancelled.

We have been fortunate to be able to hold two successful days of the festival and we thank attendees for their enthusiasm and flexibility.

In terms of our policy on passes and tickets, we ask for patience and understanding until we are able to address this in the days to come. We realize that there will be many questions to be answered from festival-goers, artists and partners. The Sled Island office in Mission has been evacuated and we are operating with limited resources.

Our commitment to the safety of the citizens of Calgary remains paramount. Please take care of your friends and family who may require assistance and stay safe.

Caught Jon Spencer last night and it was AMAZING. First Sled Island event ever and was I ever impressed with everything, including the venue. Openers also fantastic, July Talk are really good, and Catl were very fun to watch as well. Spencer had sound problems I thought to start, but put on an amazing show, totally worth the wait.

Sucks the rest of the festival got cancelled, but totally understandable considering the state of downtown.

Thanks. I enjoyed the crap out of this show. My family was busy packing up some essentials and evacuating while I was there. Pretty neat that while all the flooding was going on Sled Island still made it possible for some of us to enjoy the night.

Hopefully drummer Jon Wurster had a good time and he can convince the Mountain Goats to come up for a show.

Wurster and Narducy have been playing all year with Bob Mould, and you could tell they are locked-in.

Sled Island

With a large number of artists currently in Calgary without shows and others traveling out of the city, a number of performances have begun popping up in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and other nearby cities. Unfortunately, Sled Island 2013 remains cancelled.

However, in this difficult time, there has been an overwhelming outpouring of support from venues (traditional and non-traditional) outside of evacuation zones, festival partners and residents of Calgary and nearby cities to arrange alternate plans for these and other artists. While Sled Island 2013 is cancelled, live music continues to find a way to make its importance felt. The incredible communities that support live music throughout the year continue to surprise and humble us all, making the best of a bad situation.

If you are an artist, attendee or show promoter with a live music event taking place, we encourage you to let people know below. If you choose to partake in live music in the coming days, we urge you to do so safely and full-heartedly.

Sled Island may be cancelled, but a number of bands have pulled together to set up a street corner concert to raise money for the evacuees from Kensington.

Hosted by a childhood neighbour of the Calgary/Toronto band Lowell at 220 11 Street NW, the show will feature Lowell, local favourites Surf Kitties, Chicago’s Running and more. The music starts at 6pm, and also features a fundraising barbecue. Be sure to bring a few dollars to donate!

I'm happy to see people on twitter saying they won't be asking for a refund when/if they're offered. Doing so could bankrupt the festival and jeopardize its chances of coming back in the future.

They never did make it but thanks to Lowell and all the bands for a great night. Perhaps they were held up at The Alibi Room.

The Alibi Room, a dance studio-turned-multipurpose all-ages venue in Dalhousie, Calgary, held a Flood Island show Saturday night. Bands included Jung People, Jamaican Queens, Gianna Lauren and more.[CBC]

Lowell, a Calgary native who now hangs her hat in Toronto, was slated to play the Sled Island main stage at Olympic Plaza on Saturday. When her neighbour suggested playing on the balcony of his house in Kensington, she jumped at the opportunity — and raised $2,600 for Red Cross flood relief efforts in the process.

"[The neighbourhood] was great, they were all super excited," she said. "No one complained, but even better, everybody came and donated stuff. We couldn't have put it together without them."

Calgary firefighters showed up in the early evening, not to shut down the show, but in fact to donate to the cause.

Montreal's Technical Kidman was one of the bands to take to the Kensington rooftops at Floodstock/Sled X. Other bands included Surf Kitties, Obey the Crooks, Lowell and more.[CBC]

Flood Island: Sled Island artists band together after Calgary flooding cancels festival

http://music.cbc.ca/#/blogs/2013/6/F...ncels-festival

"Flood Island" was born.

Ad hoc shows began springing up across the city — from basements to balconies to dance studios to hot dog joints, festival performers and attendees took it upon themselves to ensure that the show went on. (Several Edmonton venues even held "Shred Island" benefit shows in support.)

Click through the gallery above for photos of five impromptu Flood Island shows that happened in Calgary on Friday and Saturday nights, and the story behind each one. You can also find more photos from the festival on CBC Music's Instagram feed.

What a wonderful set of results produced by some very scary and unfortunate circumstances! I've enjoyed reading all the posts, troutman. Great stuff.
