Nice to see Akim with a scrap. He could be a bit of a steal.
How did McCarthy look tonight?
Yeah Akim dealt a real beat down. Maybe he has come to the understanding that he has to become a bit of an enforcer if he wants to make it. There is a spot open in that slot.

I totally agree. A 'bit' of an enforcer is well stated, I think the spot of a 3rd/4th liner who can muck it up, scraps if he has to, and will show a real edge in the dirty areas is sorely lacking in the organization right now. He also showed late last year he can find the net as well. He has a huge opportunity this year and next, hopefully he takes advantage of it. Looks like he has the will to do it.

Couldn't ask for a better season opener. One of my favourite parts was how invisible Jaden Schwartz was tonight. I was expecting Schwartz to be, well, their version of Sven.
Most of you guys saw the game tonight and you saw what I saw, so I won't get into detail.
Breen really really impressed me tonight. I don't think the guy made a mistake all game. Unnoticeable, but in the good way.
Taylor was great! Some of the saves he made were shocking. Such quick reflexes.
The only guy I can say that struggled a bit tonight was McKelvie I thought. He made a few 'flubs' here and there. If anyone gets taken out of the lineup, I could see it being him.
Looking forward to tomorrow. Tonight was such an awesome experience being that it was my first game as a media member. The scouts are a-holes. The other media guys are all really nice, down to earth people (namely, Dan Kinvig and Cam Tucker).
Freeway, you're right, the game does slow down when you're in the press box. It's a like a weird switch in your head that goes from energized fan to focused media person.

Sven looks crazy good and it's only game 1! That pass to Street was some kind of awesome, I had to rewatch it like 10 times.. imagine him passing that to Cammy on the left wing in the future! His own goal just showed how sick his hands are and his ability to finish in close. Kid has Calder written all over him, sorry Nail.

Not sure bout Calder but we have a player at our hands. Sick pass to Street and then nice finish in front of the net. The guy has the whole fan base excited.
Does anyone know if theres a site for line combos and icetime for AHL?
Am I the only one who was extremely disappointed when looking at the attendance numbers? Lake Erie had 12000 people in the building yesterday, Providence and Grand Rapids had 10000. Abbotsford had 3800 ... with a possible capacity of what, 7000? That's disappointing, given that it was the season opener and Sven played. I know it's tough to draw attendance in the valley, given that it's "Canucks land", but I figured there'd be more people in the building for game 1.
But I'm glad the team got off to a great start. Only saw the highlights, but Sven's assist and goal were awesome!

Might have had to do with the Vancouver Giants playing at home last night. I believe over 7000 showed up for the giants game.
Another big reason is of course the Vancouver area probably does not want to support a flames affiliate. That said the heat have never had a propsect with a chance to be a "superstar". If Sven gets more goals like the one he got last night, over time there will be a buzz to come out and watch Sven play. I thought i read that Sven was ranked 9th of prospects not playing in the NHL. That news will get around and people will want to see him.

I agree with what you said on Breen. He never did anything particular to stand out, but he was great positionally and kept guys to the outside. Like you said, he practically made no mistakes.
On Peoria Ian Cole looked really good. I don't know if I agree with you on Schwartz, he was invisible on the stats sheet but he made some nice plays offensively, particularly on the penalty kill where he would take it to our end and get a shot on net while killing some time. He didn't make many mistakes from what I saw.
- AHL ive quality was pretty "meh". It's similar quality to what the NCAA championship game was online from a video perspective. The audio was not synced well though as they just use in rink cameras and sync it with Ryan Pinder's radio play by play.
- Pinder is very good. He continues to improve and I would ike to see him get a job with the big club. I would trade him for Kerr right now even if I could.
- From the 2nd period on Sven was pretty good, but he was pretty unnoticeable in the 1st, except the slashing penalty he took.
- Steve McCarthy and Chris Breen both really impressed me all night, I didn't notice many mistakes at all. Both were unnoticeable in a good way, except when McCarthy made a sliding play to break up an odd man rush.
- Taylor was phenomenal. I don't think anything else needs to be said.
- Reinhart was good, didn't look out of place. I like him being flanked by Walter and Horak.
Pardy was really never good at anything. He was just mediocre enough to make the NHL as a 6th/7th defenceman.
I don't know about Breen. He's nearly pure defence. I hope he can make it as a bottom pairing defenceman for the Flames one day. I'd love to have a 6'7" guy on the back end.

don't watch the ahl much, does breen use that size to push people around in front of net or along the boards?

He and Pardy are essentially the same player. Pardy is probably a better skater.
I'm pretty excited about how Horak and Reinhart looked out there. Their tenacity and skill reminded me a bit of the Nilson-Niemenen-Donovan line from back in the day.
Hopefully Baertschi can be a top level producer until the NHL comes back.
Aliu and Bouma looked great in the small portion of the game I was able to watch. They are so aggressive in their puck pursuit... both those guys could be effective NHL checkers. Also, wow... Aliu beat the crap out of that guy.
