If your immune system is so bad, your hygiene practices so poor that you can't tolerate occasional physical contact with other humans... I recommend a bubble.

How are germs getting from your hand into your body, anyway? Unless you have open wounds on your palms, or immediately shove your fingers into your mouth after shaking hands, the germs are on the outside of this thing called your "skin", which is impermeable to them. You should be more worried about the invisible cloud of microbes spreading out from someone's mouth as they say, "Hello, Mr. Sliver, I have your new puppy right here - just sign the form."

You can retire the handshake, but only if you replace it with this:

How are you supposed to swear a blood oath if you don't slice the palm of your hand open first?

My guess is chronic nose pickers who can't keep their hands away from their face are the ones most worried about germs on their hands.

He was probably disgusted.

bump

So, not so crazy now, huh? I wonder if we'd still be at 89% in favour of keeping the handshake around with COVID-19 knocking on our doors.

Had my first elbow bump with a supplier that came in yesterday. Can't say I was sorry to not have to shake hands.

Elbow bumps suck. They actually put you closer to the other person.

I think footsies is the way to go.

Good point. Maybe we just don't need to touch each other at all since it's sort of weird, anyway.

Does this mean all your other ridiculed ideas are going to turn out to be prescient as well?

Mr. Spock's Vulcan salute reportedly has moved into the halls of Congress. Lawmakers were advised on coronavirus risks by a physician during a closed-door meeting of the House Democratic caucus on Tuesday, and one piece of advice is familiar to CNET readers. The physician told lawmakers to consider using Spock's Star Trek Vulcan salute as a safe alternative to handshaking, CNN reported.

How about a quick respectful bow like the Japanese do.

The refs in my beer league did elbow bumps earlier this week during handshakes.

Yesterday, I saw a downtown business meeting end in an elbow bump in front of a Starbucks as I walked by.

Both guys kind of shrugged and chuckled (as did I) since it was odd and awkward, but a sign of the times.

I haven't taken my glove off in a hockey handshake line in 10+ years.

So much nastiness in hockey gear; I've been doing fist bumps with glove on for a long time.

What good is an elbow bump when they tell you to cough and sneeze into your elbow and not your hand?
