Is UO the first MMORPG on the list so far?
I didnt even think of them as being RPGs, since they are such a different beast, which means WoW and maybe Everquest will be in the top 20.

Technically I guess Guild Wars could be considered a MMO even though the original lacked any type of persistent world. But the definition on this is hazy now a days.
I didn't expect to find any MMORPG's on this because as you said comparing them to a single player game is a completely different experience.
Glad to see it on the list, but for anyone who actually played UO it definitely ranks higher than EQ or WOW.. and just a few slots above Guild Wars is an absolute slap in the face.

So a few games that haven't been listed yet that definitely should be on that list if others of their genre aren't:
WOW
EQ
DAOC
FF2/3
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy Tactics
Breath of Fire
Ultima VIII
Dragon Warrior
Lufia
Anymore?

This game has always been so underrated. I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if it cracks the list.

Celtic Tales wouldn't be considered RPG i'm pretty sure. Closer to Strategy, or Kingdom Building type which shouldn't be surprising as it is a Koei game. Didn't think anyone would know about this game as it wasn't very popular. It was hard as heck though.

Er, Dragon Warrior was already 20something?
Also I'm still waiting on Mass Effect and some SMT and the other ones mentioned.
I don't see .hack making it. WoW though, definitely.

The rest...
#20: EverQuest
#19: System Shock 2
#18: Dark Souls
#17: EarthBound
#16: Diablo
#15: Secret of Mana
#14: Final Fantasy Tactics
#13: Planescape: Torment
#12: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
#11: Final Fantasy VII
#10: Fallout 3
#9: Mass Effect
#8: World of Warcraft
#7: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
#6: Diablo II
#5: Final Fantasy IV
#4: Pokémon Red/Blue
#3: Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
#2: Chrono Trigger
#1: Final Fantasy VI
I foresee lots of butthurt over FFVII not cracking the top ten. Feel like Dark Souls and Skyrim are kinda highly ranked even though I love the former. The top two make me happy. As does #9.

Shocked Skyrim is that high. It's a beautiful game, but Morrowind and Oblivion were much better plays IMO. Pokemon Red/Blue pretty much right where they belong.

Darklands was great, but probably not mainstream enough to make this list. Pioneering for sure though.

Disappointed to not see Dragon Warrior/Quest IV making the list at all. Between FFIV and DQIV, I lost hundreds of hours as a 10-12 year old on those games. Still playthrough DQIV once a year too.
Seiken Densetsu 3 (would have been Secret of Mana 2 if it hit NA) is a notable miss, yet understandable since it was never technically released NA side. Thankfully there were story guides on the net shortly after it was released so it made it much more enjoyable to play the Japanese import.

As VI and IV. Nowadays they're generally known as VI and IV, and not III and II - ever since the PSOne re-releases, I believe.

Some of you will hate me for saying it, but Mass Effect is far too high. Skyrim as well.

I love Mass Effect, and I agree with you that it's too high. In terms of being a solid RPG, it falls short...but the story and universe itself really sucks you in more than most RPGs ever could. That's worth a lot I guess.
