Downloaded Windows 8 Pro this morning, and have tried to install it three times. Every time, it gets to 100%, says it's about to reboot my computer, then a window pops up, says Installation has failed, and when I click ok, I'm just back at my windows 7 desktop. Help!
I have since the first attempt, disabled Virus Protection, uninstalled iTunes and other Apple software, exited a bunch of background programs, etc.

Anything funky storage wise on your system? A hardware RAID setup, a Linux partition lurking, etc?
No funky storage, SSD for windows and apps, other drive for some files. Other drive has Windows 7 Home edition on it which I don't use. Both drives have a small partion called system reserved (which the computer set up automattically.
Your Windows 7 Home, can you boot into it or just sitting on the disc?
Which version of Windows are you trying to upgrade from?
I should be able to boot into win 7 home premium. I'm Upgrading from Win7 Professional.
I burned the downloaded Win 8 Pro onto a DVD, but it won't let me upgrade when booting from the DVD. I might just do a clean install, I've had some messages come up everytime the computer reboots, saying that such and such a file is missing.
If a clean install is reasonably easy, I would suggest that for sure.
I am planning a clean install in the next few days, but I have a both a backup and a VHD of my system if I need it, so I have no real concerns in the unlikely event that something goes horribly wrong.

I'm gonna be buying a new computer fairly soon here... should I be keeping my eye out for one that comes with Windows 7, or is Windows 8 worth having? It's not another vista repeat... is it?

again, besides the stupid decision to get rid of the start menu and force people to use the metro interface, Windows 8 is a great operating system. it's faster and has a smaller footprint than 7, has great features like Hyper-V and Windows-To-Go built in, and it's by far the most secure operating system that Microsoft has developed. if you spend 5 bucks and install Start8 to get your start menu back, you'll get all the benefits while still making it operate like 7
here's a good review that lists the pros and cons:

basically all the cons are about the new interface, which are resolved by using Start8
Seconded.
I still haven't felt much of a use for the Apps and related UI features. But for pretty much running Chrome, managing files, playing the occasional game, Windows 8 has been solid. I just timed it: my system wakes up from sleep (i.e. everything but the RAM powered off) in 6 seconds. So much more convenient than any past sleep/hibernate feature in Windows.
So, this morning, I started using win 8, i successfully connected the computer to our domain, and other than running a bit slow, it was going fine. After one of the restarts, my network computers are no longer showing up. Restarting, creating an actual domain user and logging in with that, and turning off windows firewall have not resolved the problem.
edit: To clarify, and I am just guessing here, but it is entirely possible (maybe even extremely likely) that a previous setting that applied to Windows 7 through GPO is not applying to Windows 8, because the setting has changed.

I don't think it is quite as bad as he makes it out to be, but many things he says are completely true.
Microsoft could avoid all this bad press by simply reintroducing a proper start menu in an expedited service pack, and let users choose whether to use the metro interface or not. but they're way too stubborn to do that

Exactly. Give people an easy way to do that and this problem goes away.
I would bet it happens pretty quickly.

what makes you say that? everything i've seen from them so far has them sticking to their guns and completely ignoring any and all criticisms about the start screen

If they don't they will get zero traction in the business market, and that is their main base. If Vista was a flop, then Windows 8 will be like the Titanic, if nothing changes.
If I tried to put this on desktops at work, there would be an absolute revolt.
