My wife went to a vet clinic one time for her one cat that I really don't care for and dropped like $600 to find out nothing.
Currently I'm not crazy about paying $600 for credit card theft that I reported, got an affidavit for, only to have the Canada Post strike screw up my return. Since I didn't get this back to them by the specified date....it's assumed that I did make those charges. Worse...if you're going to steal my credit card info and waste $600, why do it at a freaking day spa.

I hear ya on that. Took the motorbike from Calgary (110.9 that day) to Fernie (131.9 that day).
I'm sure some of that is the "Middle of nowhere" premium, but to put almost $30 into a motorcycle is proof that someone's getting screwed in a big way.

First property tax bill on the new house. Bit of a shock to the system vs. the condo we moved out of.

I went to the Spearmint Rhino in Vegas two years ago. Went to grab my bill and looked down at a 1800 dollar bill... I had to take out a cash advance on my credit card, having to explain that bill to my ex was awful..
Now, I don't frequent the strip clubs anymore...

Wouldn't that be like 40 lap dances?

always hate paying condo fees, when they clearly did very little for me. I happily sold my condo and bought a house (between the new mortgage and no condo fees, I gained 400 square feet and paid less money)

are you factoring in your utilities with that? most condo fees cover most if not all utilities, so i don't mind paying them when i'm only on the hook for my electric bill

Also don't forget routine repairs and maintenance to your house that would be covered by the condo board if you were living in a condo? Ditto for things like landscaping and snow/ice removal.

I'm amazed that nobody has answered "Gates" or "Shatner".
Microsoft stuff costs a fortune, as does a photo-op with old Captain Kirk.

This argument always kills me.
I've crunched the "Condo Fees versus Household Costs" equation so many times that I've lost count, and the only solid conclusion I've ever come up is the most obvious one:
In a condo, you pay a modest premium for convenience. With a home, you save a modest premium by putting in some effort.
My only real fear living in a condo (which I do) is a special assessment that I have zero control over. But hey, stuff happens to houses all the time as well.

So lawyers should prepare and register your new mortgage, search title, search taxes, obtain an insurance binder, obtain RPR, request funds, pay out debts, pay out LTO fees, report to client and lender, for free?

Our condo fees covered none of that. Just snow removal (which I did myself as I was tired of waiting for it to be done) and lawn care (the lawn was so small, it would have taken me about 5 minutes to cut it using scissors).

Your condo board sucked.

Condo fees go to many things, such as, common property expenses, financial statements, insurance for the building, and most importantly to the reserve fund (which often saves owners from having to come up with special assesments).

In all seriousness, anything to do with mechanics and vehicle maintenance pisses me off. It's the only service that I can think of, where I frequently get treated like a rube. I go out of my way to make people not feel like idiots when I explain one of my specialties to them. . . why can't mechanics do the same?
If I treated my clients the way mechanics treat me, I wouldn't have any clients.
