We just got our power back (just NE of Joplin). Joplin got hit and hit hard. Went right through the heart of town.
Stay safe!

I don't think the people of Joplin got as good of a warning as we did. I hope for the best.
Discovery channel is doing it's special on the Tuscaloosa Tornado
We got a decent warning I think as I was tracking it during the game for a couple of hours. Problem was where people went ended up getting leveled. Places you don't expect to get leveled like a brand new Walgreen's, Home Depot, a Wa lMart took major damage.
Essentially from some the pictures on the local news mid-south Joplin is gone.
I believe the High school got destroyed. It was graduation day...thank goodness graduation was at the MSSU campus and not the high school.

Live in Carl Junction. Just NW.
One main vortex with now and then some smaller vortexes on the side but those may not have touched down. Tracked along 20th street with 1/2 mile or so track with damage ranging from 7th to 32nd street. If you want to google map it the 20th street and Florida area and for blocks east and west no longer has buildings standing. Complete destruction.
The pictures speak for themselves but the one with the water geyser makes it pretty clear. All those pictures are from Rangeline and 15-20th street area. That is part of the major commercial district of the four state area. It seems to be looking back into the densely populated subdivision to the west. There is nothing left in the subdivisions of that area.
Local meteorologist believes this is an EF4 not EF3.
One more picture. This doesn't look too bad until you realize it is one of the two major hospitals in town and in the area. From what we are hearing it is crippled from the direct hit it took.
I think we are done in this area tonight though more storms this week. AS I type a tornado warning issued for the Rogers-Springdale area of Arkansas. That's about 65 miles south of us (I play hockey in Springdale every week).
I have a niece in Joplin. Haven't heard anything yet.
Just found out she was not in Joplin. Good news.

For more photos if interested or potential help in locating those still missing. There is a stunning one of the St. John's helicopter on its side just destroyed with the hospital behind it. What looks like a parkade is supposed to have glass because that is actually the hospital.
Still trying to track down one of my underlings who lives in that area. We tracked down our other guy. They are fine but lost their apartment and cars.
I'm going to try to get some sleep. Not sure what we'll be doing tomorrow.

Listening to the police scanner and they're talking about needing 20 body bags at a apt. complex and just now "were do you want to stack them" They created a code in how to talk about bodies.

From CNN...89 confirmed dead and counting. Just an indicator of how big this thing was....
Quote:
St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin was hit directly by the tornado and suffered significant structural damage, city officials said. CNN affiliate KSHB said there were reports of fires throughout the hospital
Residents 70 miles away from Joplin in Dade County, Missouri, found X-rays from St. John's in their driveways, said Foreman, indicating the size and power of the storm
89 confirmed dead as mentioned and hundreds still unaccounted for. We know 4 families that lost everything but thankfully have their lives.
X-rays from the hospital that was hit have been found 70 miles away.
As could be expected we are under a boil water order right now. 20,000 people without power and Empire Power says that may last for well over a week (search and rescue is more important right now than restoring power to what is no longer standing).
The only "good" thing is that this is the heart of WalMart country. The global head office is 60 miles south in Bentonville, Arkansas. There have already been 3 semi-trucks diverted to the staging area as MSSU in Joplin to drop off supplies. That will likely continue but also won't be enough. If you can donate to the red cross as hundreds of families have lost absolutely everything.
We will be emptying our closets of everything but the most common outfits we wear when we get home after work. The least we can do.
Ernie-my thoughts go out to you and everyone who is down there right now. My husband has been working in Joplin as a government contractor for weatherization projects for the State of Missouri for the past three months, and they had plans to work there for the next two years. Someone from his work crew is missing still, but the rest are okay. He was supposed to be driving out (from KC) this morning but obviously now he will not be going.
Saturday night we had the sirens going off in Overland Park for a couple of hours with really odd sounding thunder and weird lightning/heavy rain, but I didn't really think anything of it because the sirens here go off so often, it's like a smoke alarm with a bad battery. Joplin has seen the worst tornado since the early 50s, and my heart breaks for them.
We will be sending clothing this week as well, and we have several friends who will be doing the 'closet clean out' too, and sending their things with my husband.
So, so sad. I am so sorry about your friends. Thankfully they're okay. Hopefully the storms in the next few days won't be as horrible.
