It's more than a bit of a logjam.

NHL net #1 - ?????
NHL net #2 - ?????

AHL net #1 - Gillies (RFA)
AHL net #2 - Rittich (RFA)
AHL net #3 - McCollum

ECHL net #1 - McDonald

Then you still have Schneider, who will be 20 this summer and already has 4 years of junior under his belt, plus he has a contract so they need to get him playing pro. He's already stagnating down there in the WHL.

Now you have Parsons, who will also be 20 this summer and has 3 years as a starter in junior under his belt. He really should go pro too, but there literally isn't a net for him.

So let's say the Flames only bring in one NHL goalie, sign Rittich as the NHL backup and then loan McCollum to another AHL team again.

NHL net #1 - Signed guy
NHL net #2 - Rittich

AHL net #1 - Gillies
AHL net #2 - McDonald

ECHL net #1 - Schneider/Parsons

You still have Scneider/Parsons without a net or potentially stagnating as a 20 year old in the CHL.

..and that's assuming they loan McCollum and don't bring in a proven NHL back up, which seems like a stretch.

I would assume Rittich, McCollum & Schneider are cut loose. Though Rittich has been pretty solid in the AHL, I can't imagine anyone having confidence in him to backup in the NHL.

McDonald might actually thrive as a starter in the ECHL while Gillies racks up more starts in the AHL. They both need as much game time as possible.

I dont see why they would cut Rittich loose after expending a large amount of capital bringing him over, getting him used to the American game, having him actually play very well, only to cut him?
McCollum is bait and will be gone and Schneider is still pretty young. They will find room for every goalie they want to keep whether in their org or others.

Another scenario may be...

NHL net #1 - Signed guy
NHL net #2 - Signed guy

AHL net #1 - Gillies
AHL net #2 - Parsons

ECHL net #1 - McDonald

McCollum - loaned out to another pro team (exposed for expansion draft)
Rittich - loaned out or walk away from this unsigned RFA, but he has been good
Schneider - loaned out or bought out, annual buyout cost is $108,333 over 4 years, he hasn't been that good

Agreed - his SV% and GAA are top 3 in the AHL. To cut him loose after having that kind of success would suggest that the Flames signed the 24yo Rittich to a no-win, 1 and done contract, regardless of his results/success. That can't possibly be the case.

In your opinion, what would Rittich have had to accomplish this season in order for the Flames to keep him?

Agreed, would be hard to part with Rittich after his success this year, what more could you ask from him?
I'd go with something like this:
NHL:
re-sign Elliott
Backup: battle between Gillies/Rittich

AHL:
Gillies/Rittich
Parsons/McDonald

ECHL:
McDonald/Parsons
Schneider

McCollom loaned out again

If Gillies/Rittich are not up to NHL-ready then sign one of the many capable journeyman backups and loan out, trade, or cut loose one of the above

It just seems to be a number's game. I would love for Rittich to come in and earn the starter or backup role in Calgary.

I think priority would be given to find a AHL/ECHL net for either one of Gillies, Parsons or McDonald first though.

Plus, McCollum needs to be kept for expansion draft requirements and Schneider may still be given a chance to demonstrate what he can do at the pro level.

Signing two NHL goalies plus RFA Rittich would give Calgary 8 goaltenders on pro contracts, it's just not realistic.

Maybe I'm wrong and they keep Rittich? Who knows how it will play out really... Rittich & Gillies in Stockton. McCollum loaned to another AHL team. McDonald stays in the ECHL. Both Parsons & Schneider remain in junior as overagers?

Nick Schneider was sent home by the Tigers. He let in 4 goals in 8 minutes against Red Deer the other night after Bulllion was pulled (2 of those goals were shorthanded in less than a minute). Bizarre situation.

Expected Tuulola to have better numbers at this level.

I am willing to write this season off as adapting to North America.

Will be a concern if it continues next season.

I wonder if they even offer Riley Bruce a contract?

Has to be signed by June (??) IIRC, or he's a free agent?

He needs to be signed by June 1st or he re-enters the 2017 draft.

If he is not selected in the 2017 draft, he will be a free agent.

Phillips and the Royals are gonna be in tough against Everett - they clinched a division banner and were a force all year. Would be a massive upset if the Royals managed to take them out.

Nick Schneider has rejoined the Tigers after about a week away. Stated that it was due to illness, but didn't elaborate.
