They are comparable defensively, slight advantage to Brodie.
Offensively, Barrie is significantly better.

Barrie would be a replacement for Gus, not for Brodie. A second pairing powerplay specialist that you do your best to shelter. I think that the team sees Andersson as having emerged as the Brodie replacement.
I feel like we're working towards giving Hanifn and Andersson the top-pairing minutes and using Gio to shelter Barrie on the second pair.

Dump salary. Flames need to dump salary and Ryan is a great place to start.

They are not comparable defensively. Not even close.
Barrie is Kylington, defensively.

I am not sure that Barrie moves the needle significantly more than Brodie, considering he will likely be a higher cap hit.
I am sure some of the more savvy posters can find advanced stats that might say different.

Barrie is a better player than Brodie.
Imagine Brodie as a RHS, slightly worse defensively and an ability to QB PP1 and post about 50 points

That is not even remotely accurate.

Yes, the better comparison for Barrie is Gustafsson.

Brodie's defensive abilities are being wildly overstated in here.

Barrie is a complete liability defensively. I do not know why you think differently, there is ample evidence of this.
I would rather pay Gustafsson $3M to be our PP specialist than pay Barrie the $5M or more it will take to acquire him.

Top pairing Brodie? That guy? No they aren't, Barrie's are.

Ryan still has value despite his contract, though. If Fleury + 2nd can't even get future considerations, I imagine Ryan could get Fleury (retained) + 2nd or 3rd.

A top 4 of Hanifin, Andersson, Giordano, and Barrie would be a nice fresh look for the season.
Barrie takes on the PP1 and can be sheltered a little at 5 on 5 with Giordano.
If Barrie and Brodie are going to come in at comparable salaries I take Barrie for the help on the PP. I think his defensive numbers would be propped up playing with Gio just like Brodie’s have been.
If that pairing doesn't mesh you always have the option to put Hanifin with Barrie and give the defensive minutes to Andersson and Gio.
The more I think of it the more I think it’s a great fit for team and player.
If Tre can add Hall + Barrie I would be really excited for the upcoming season.

I think that Gustafsson showed us the potential of having a really effective offensive d-man running the power-play. Whatever his other warts, Barrie is excellent at offence, and has a long track record at putting up points. If the team wants to improve that aspect specifically of the back-end, I think Barrie is a good choice, as long as you're not relying on him to take tough defensive assignments every night.

No word on Alex Galchenyuk eh?
I really think he is a guy we should take a shot on.

If you're not going to play the guy in the top 6 or with some really skilled linemates he will be a detriment to the team.
I don't see him taking a spot away from Tkachuk, Gaudreau, or Dube on the left side and I would much rather see third line center minutes go to Bennett.
Just not a fit here right now. Money is better spent elsewhere.

Powerplay Quarterback

Barrie's game went downhill in Toronto, but he was solid with the Avs. The Laffs were a tire fire defensively last year, the forwards barely helped out on the defensive end. I think Barrie will be way better this year with another team.
