so was I, doesn't change the fact I'm half-asian.
I know for me, personally as a kid growing up he was definitely someone i looked up to/ felt I could relate to, and made hockey more accessible for me.

I think still it's because NHL lacks the likes of soccer and NBA when it comes to marketing. Remember a player recently named Brandon Yip? He is a CBC from Vancouver, but the NHL did absolutely nothing to pump his tires. Granted, he was only a meddling player bouncing between the AHL and the NHL....

This kid reminds me of David Sills, a quarterback "prodigy" who was "offered" a scholarship to play at USC when he was in 7th grade. He's now finishing his last year of high school and is nowhere near the talent that some hyped him up to be (although he has signed on to play at West Virginia apparently)...
P.S. I think it would be neat if an NHL player had only one name (i.e. like Ichiro).

The discussion was about popularity of hockey in Asia. The difference between Paul Kariya and the other names mentioned is that he is Asian by heritage, not by birth. Jim Paek was born in Korea and coaches their national team. He did grow up in Canada, which may be a factor in it not being as big of a deal. I don't know how well-known he was in Korea when he made the NHL. Richard Park was born in Korea, but grew up in North America.
I am absolutely not discounting Paul Kariya as a role model for Asian-Canadians or even people in Asia with aspirations of playing hockey.
What I'm suggesting is that the popularity of hockey in Asian countries is likely to be benefited far more by having a home-grown player make the NHL than a Canadian with few ties to the country of his heritage. That's what's exciting about this kid with respect to growing hockey fans internationally.
Hopefully that makes what I'm saying clearer than my one sentence drive-by from a few days ago.

Not Brazilian except as the incidental place of his birth. He even lived in Indonesia longer than Brazil, but is really Canadian-raised. Same deal as with Paul Kariya, but even less so, since his family isn't even originally from Brazil.

Even though Setoguchi was crap in Calgary, he did have as good or better a career as others mentioned here, Paek for example (who I liked quite a bit).
Dumba is part Filipino. Ho Sang (if he ever makes it) is part Chinese.
I'm old enough to remember a real skill guy named Steve Tsijura who played for Medicine Hat.

It's too bad Zachary Yuen decided not to sign with the Jets. I'm sure he would have been a decent defensive men for them for years to come.. He basically just ruined his NHL career.
Been playing in the ECHL the last 3 seasons.

So he scored 15 goals in 6 games against top Peewee triple A teams in Canada. I'll definitely be following this kid's hockey trajectory to see where he ends up. Really cool.

Kailer Yamamoto is another half-Japanese-American with a lot of skill. He'll probably be a top 15 pick next next. 57 points in 43 games a year ahead of his draft year is pretty impressive. Of course, he's only 5'8, so....
Does Pavel Barber live in Japan, or does he just train Iguchi a couple of times a year?
