It's available now: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goog...585027354?mt=8
It looks great so far. I prefer the way Apple does turn-by-turn but street view and trustworthy location information is more important to me so I'll be using Google Maps.

I can't find it in the App Store on my phone...

See how everything works out? If Apple hadn't dumped the original maps from the phone, we wouldn't have a better version now with turn-by-turn. This whole thing started because Google refused to add it to the original app. Now they have, and they've lost a pretty significant footprint along the way by being relegated to 3rd party aftermarket status.
At the end of the day though, do I really care how it happened? Not particularly. I believe "means to an end" is rather apropos here.

Found it.
On first usage, this isn't as good as the old google maps. How come I can't type in someone's name in my contact list and have it appear? It seems slower and chunkier than the old version. BUT, I'll give it a chance. At least it has street view.

Don't totally agree with FanIn80 here. If Google had allowed turn-by-turn in the previous maps it would be the crappy maps app that Apple created (using google data). This would be similar to how crappy the youtube app was when it was made by Apple. Now we have a google created app for maps and youtube, which is much better than what Apple made. Granted they could have released their app and gave the stock maps driving directions, but that doesn't seem to benefit anyone but Apple.
Google also made a way for external links to open with google maps instead of apple maps, so you can bypass the stock maps.

Apparently you aren't safe in Australia with Google maps either:
http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/...m-google-maps/
This is clearly a problem with Australia, not the maps.

Google Maps doesn't seem to have any connection to the phone's contacts. Pretty big fail on Google's part if this is true. Much bigger fail than any of the issues with Apple Maps. As nice as the app is, it's useless If I can't enter an address by picking a contact.

How is that a fail by Google?
Google is just making the App, Apple is the one who integrates their crappy map application with their contact list. Google has zero control over that. Google has allowed other third party developers to use Google Maps in their Apps but your issue is totally out of Google's control.
It's Apples fault if they continue to use an inferior Map with their contact list, not Googles.

Plenty of other non-apple apps can use the phones contacts list. This is nothing to do with Apple.

Do people seriously put in someone's address into their contact list?

I do, but only if
a) I am planning on using it later to find it while I am driving.
b) It is needed for some other use (like business stuff)
c) I want to send that address to someone as a contact, so they can easily use a map application to find it.

Yes, quite regularly, and useful now with maps that can search from a contacts list.

Perhaps its unfair to call Google maps useless, but If I were to design a maps app, and were making a list of things that needed to be in the app, Contacts list integration would probably be the first thing on the list.

lol well, making sure the Maps in the Maps App worked would probably be the first. Maybe that's where Apple went wrong?
