Not a fan of Encarnacion, but Alonso is the big deal here. He may be the Jays starting 1st baseman next season. Alonso is being blocked by Votto in Cincinatti, but believe me this guy is now the Jays best prospect. He's probably better than any of the prospects being offered in the Halladay trades.

All rumors i had seen linked Rolen to the Reds for either one of these guys. To get both is pretty good IMO.

If this deal doesn't involve the Jays paying a portion of Rolen's salary, this is a steal.

I hope Rolen agrees to the trade.

The interesting thing here is that 2 teams out of the playoff race are making sensible trades at trade deadline, rather than the offseason.

Alonso was picked seventh overall, one pick ahead of Gordon Beckham who is playing for the whitesox this year.

Ed Price of Fanhouse is now saying the reports about Alonso being the guy aren't accurate

It does seem odd that the reds would give up their first rounder from last year for Rolen.

I hopped on a couple of Reds forums and they are none too impressed if it's true.

Odd move by the Jays, thought if Doc was not moved they would keep players like Rolen..... To make a run at it in 2010...

Its a good trade value wise but what does this mean for next season....

They are now saying this on a site:

The Reds are sending Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke and Zach Stewart to Toronto for Scott Rolen.

Stewart is a very highly touted pitching prospect, third round pick in 08 that is absolutely lighting up the minors.

http://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.htm?id=10490

Zach Stewart pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the save. That's 9 2/3 innings in Louisville so far without giving up an earned run, and he hasn't given one up since June 24th, when he was a Mudcat. In his 89 total innings (split between 3 levels), his ERA is a stellar 1.62.

3:14pm: Rolen approved the deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). ESPN's Keith Law says Yonder Alonso is not in the deal. Instead, it'll be Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart heading to Toronto according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Roenicke seems decent too. 90% of the Reds forum don't like giving up Stewart, they're going on about how he will either be the Jays closer next year or Cy Young in 6 years............hahaha........seems like a good deal by J.P.

I would have liked it if the Jays kept Rolen. He brings the right attitude to the ball park. I think if Rois had that same attitude there would be no talk about trading him. It is similiar to Wells. Wells seems to not really give a crap. I know that is his style. But still if he ramped up the intensity then he would be a better player.

As for Rios, personally I view this guy as an average outfielder who could be easily replaced with another outfielder at allot lower cost....

He needs to rebound next season and find his groove or I bet he is gone....
According to Wins Above Replacement (arguably one of the best ways of judging a player's entire game), Rios valued as the 7th best OFer (not just RFer) in 2008, 9th in 2007, and 22nd in 2006. Even in an off-year this season, he's still in the top 40 (ahead of guys like Sizemore, Cust, Soriano and tied with guys like Dye, Markakis, and Carlos Lee).

Rios may not be a great outfielder (although he was the past 2 seasons), but he's far from an average one.

So we unloaded our cleanup hitter and best defensive player for more pitching prospects?

Ugh.*facepalming*

No, we unloaded an aging injury prone third baseman when his value is the highest it's been in a long time, in a year where we have no shot for pitching prospects, which you can never have enough of, one of which will probably go right to our bullpen.
