I'm surprised y'all were surprised. Highly advanced civilization is evasive about their culture, has only fleeting, superficial diplomatic relationships with other galactic powers, and refuses to allow "outsiders" on their planet? C'mon guys, the signs were pretty obvious that they were keeping something very depraved a secret...
Frankly I thought it was the second-weakest episode so far, beaten only by the third episode about Number One being Illyrian. Not bad mind you, just not as good as the rest.

It's actually based on a famous sci-fi story, but I'd never thought ST would ever tackle it.

Two things,
1. You realize all the focus on advanced medical technology on this world (at the expense of all other technologies judging by their space-faring capabilities and reluctance to understand "the machine") is just so they can heal the child continuously and prolong his suffering and torture for as long as possible to keep their machine running. It also reminded me of the Emperor of Mankind of Warhammer 40K whose rotting body sits on the Golden Throne just to provide the psychic beacon necessary for space travel.
2. Pike is given a way out - to be happy with a woman he obviously is attracted to, and to be healed in 10 years time and he completely shuts the door on that and his own future happiness and wellbeing because he disagrees with their principles.

Something I hadn't considered before, but read later in a review of the episode: the Majalans' sacrifice of a child for the sake of their sky-city's continued functioning is an allegory for how some Americans feel about the integrity of their "second amendment rights", especially in the wake of the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

I don't think people were surprised about the secret. I think they are surprised the writers didn't come up with some cop-out solution.

Which is a huge credit to this show. Like I said, it just keeps getting better.
Although...I was kind of hoping they'd manage to find some way to sneak a "KAH-LI-MAH!!" chant in there somewhere.

So what are the odds we actually get to see the Gorn this season? I'm wondering how faithful they'll be to TOS while at the same time really hoping it's more than some guy in a rubber suit

They did a full CGI Gorn in Enterprise and to say the least it was uninspiring.
Really the Orville upped the ante with the spider parasite effects in this weeks episode.
Though some part of me does want a dude in a Rubber cheesy suit.
I wonder if we're going to see Klingons, without the head bumps

No way!
This show has built up so much cred with me that I want them to represent the Gorn as exactly as we know them.
Dude in the rubber suit. The same rubber suit. The whole crew in rubber suits, cheesy uniforms and all! Do it up.

At the end of the series I want to see them do a refit of the Enterprise to the latest technology of that age which looks suspiciously like Cardboard controls and disco balls.
Oh my god Captain, this control panel is so advanced, and now we store data on atrack tapes its amazing.

I want them to take the time-honored tradition of a retro episode and crank it up to 11.
That DS9 Episode where they go back in time into the TOS 'Trouble with Tribbles' episode? That but x1000.
These guys know what they're doing. They've got a seemingly unlimited budget, do with it what you will!

After first hearing about SNW my first reaction was to groan at yet more TOS era trek, but now that they've proven they have capable writers and show runners I'd be interested in more early Star Fleet stuff. I thought the USS Franklin design was awesome in Beyond, I'd really like to see a series set in that era between Enterprise and TOS. A brand new Federation full of different species trying to cooperate for the first time, should be ripe for good stories

I want a horrific dark series featuring WW3 and the Eugenics Wars, and how Mankind eventually rose up against the genetically superior ubermen.

The lost era (enterprises b-c, Curzon Dax, stargazer, khitomer accords) would be ok with me!

I thought that was the best episode of Trek in at least 20 years. Just great stuff all around, I love this series!

The storyline was based on an old script from Gene Roddenberry that went unused in TOS.

This is no doubt the actual trek that most of us have seemingly been pining for so hard. I am surprised, I had very little hope after learning the time period, link to discovery, and being so disappointed in kurtzmans era so far. But this is it. 20-25 episodes a season and this could power the next generation of Fanhood.

Also, the theme song and opening is really starting to gel for me. I find myself humming it, and the sweet sweet nectar of nostalgia at the end deserves a chefs kiss...

I’m just so thankful there were still Trek people in Hollywood.
I figured they were extinct.
