That's not allowed in the NHL, is it seriously okay in MLB? What if he suffered a season ending injury after being traded?

At around 9:00 p.m., the Mets reportedly agreed to a deal with the Brewers to trade Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores for Carlos Gomez:
Wilmer Flores—who has been with the Mets organization since he signed as a 16-year-old in 2007—started tonight’s game against the Padres, and apparently word filtered down to him that he was traded, because he began crying while on the field:
Usually players are immediately pulled from the game when they are traded—Troy Tulowitzki was yanked out of the game in the ninth inning a couple of nights ago when he was traded—but Flores wasn’t. What gives?

From DJF on Tulo:
But obviously this game was about one player, and one player alone. The one that Jeff Francis, according to a great piece from Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star, calls “the most driven athlete I’ve ever played with.” Or that Todd Helton says is “a master of his craft. His whole life revolves around getting ready to play that day. Baseball is first and foremost in his mind and everything he does is to get ready for that night’s game.”
Please get some pitching. This will be a hell of a team with a couple of extra arms.

If the Jays can get a pair of okay starters, with the pen they now have along with that awesome lineup, they should at least get one of the wild card spots.
I don't see them being able to reach the Yankees, although they do play them 13 more times and anything could happen. If they win 10 of those games, they'll make up the difference right there.

Sources: #BlueJays have spoken with #Tigers about David Price today.

If you're going to empty your prospect pool and take a serious run at it this year, this would be the guy to do it for. The Jays have to go for it this year, there's too much talent in the lineup to not get some more pitching. Adding Price takes this staff to another level.
Price-Buehrle-Dickey-Estrada-Hutchison
Add another proven veteran bullpen arm and this should be a playoff team.

Trading for price would be a major mistake.
The jays are losing buerhle, estrada and dickey next year to free agency. Going for a rental would leave them with no prospects and no rotation next year.
They need to go after one of the three san diego starters or other guys under contract.
Think long game. Their whole core of position players is here next year too. If they crap out this year they have one more shot, maybe more if one of joey bats or ee resigns.
Shields for example would be a much better target. With his contract he wouldn't be crazy expensive in a trade and with their offence, they just need an innings eater or two who can pull off a 3.5ish era.

Agreed. If the Jays were winning the division then I might have a different position because then the Jays would effectively be trading to win the World Series (not just to maybe make the playoffs)... they're a .500 team and .500 teams have no business trading top prospects for a rental.
That's not to say they shouldn't trade for a pitcher... they just need to set their sights on someone that either has value years left (either contract or arbitration) or someone who's cheap (So not David Price). With regards to next year they still have an option on Dickey (which I'm leaning towards them picking-up) So they have Dickey, Hutchison, Stroman and after factoring in arbitration raises and Martin's raise probably not much money to dip into free agency. I'd bet that we see Norris and a reclamation project rounding out the rotation.

It is almost August - how many wins above replacement is a stud pitcher going to earn for the Jays at this point? Enough to earn the wild card?

Probably not. It'd be close but any DL stint on the part of a major piece or improvement by any of the teams the Jays would need to leapfrog would put them on the outside looking in. I'd say 50-50 at best.

Meh, if he's cheap then sure. Otherwise pass.

There is ~ 60 games left, if the Jays continue to proceed with a 5 man rotation that's roughly 12 games a piece.
At this time the Jays only have 4 Starters, as they DFA'd their 5th yesterday.
To acquire a legit starter would take the spot where the Jays will need to recall someone from minors.
So its a huge difference in my opinion

It's not actually. Take David Price (I think he's basically the best rental left on the market)... thus far he has accumulated 3.5fWAR on the season so if we prorate that out over the remainder of the year that comes out to an expected win above replacement of 1.29 over the rest of the season if you add that to the half win or so that you'd get upgrading to Tulo from Reyes you still don't make up the two that the Jays are currently out (and that's assuming no additional DL stints above expected or parallel improvements from the other teams.
It'd be close but certainly not enough to warrent the risk.

@RogMillions: RT @jonmorosi: A #BlueJays offer of LHP Daniel Norris, LHP Matt Boyd, and CF Anthony Alford may be enough to get David Price from #Tigers.

I'm trying to figure this out, I struggle with the WAR, does a 1.29 WAR over 12 starts not equal 3.5 MORE wins for the Jays? A few pages ago I used the simple math of (Price or ?) going say, 9-3 in the 12 starts over a starter who would go 6-6, this would give the team 3 more wins. I would only go after a rental if there is a very good chance of signing him to an extension.
