If Flames want to tie up a retention slot for the next two years then I think they could get a haul for retained Coleman.
IMO the only way they do this is if they get a solid asset in addition to opening a roster spot, for the reasons you mentioned.
It only makes sense for a contender, so picks will be later in the draft. They might be willing to give up a young NHL ready player in order to go for it.
Not common, but it happens.

If they can get a haul or even decent return for Coleman, then I’m very open to trading him. I just think trading him for very little to “solve a middle 6 log jam for the youngsters” is a waste, and that problem could be solved in other ways

Yeah any tweaking to the veteran core can only happen in the off season IMO. Too disruptive in season. Next year will probably be like this one - in or out of the playoffs, it will be close right to the wire.

I don’t think Glencross is very high value now.

I could be mistaken but I think I heard something at some point this year that the Flames think Gridin might push for a spot sooner rather than later.

Coleman and Kadri IMO going forward need to be left alone. 2 pretty excellent vets who every new face on the team can learn from ON and OFF the ice
Both do things the community needs and are bigger parts to what Calgary Flames players need to see and represent the city beyond hockey
I say this becsuse we have the best Alumni in the league . We have the best Alumni in the league becsuse they were mentored by the likes of
- Harley Hotchkiss
- BUd McCaig
- Daryl Seaman
- Cliff Fletcher
- Badger Bob Johnson
Look at how many former flames players went into coaching after as an example
That's a dsmn impressively cool list when you look at it
Yeah we don't have alot of Cups but we have a very respected Organization which is ultimately why I cheer for the flames..
Good human beings play here, will play here and management currently couldn't be better since we lost 3 exceptional philanthropist owners who's families now carry the tradition.

I want the flames to go get Akil Thomas. He is stuck behind depth and should be relatively cheap right shot. Could be another top 9 forward.

I'm pretty pumped that it looks like we might be having back to back Calder candidates, have the flames ever had top 3 in calder votes two years in a row? (Yes I know I'm getting ahead of myself but damn is Parekh lookin good)

The RFA d-man crop would seem to be more attractive than the goal scoring options.

lets make sure Wolf gets top 3 first
a deep cut for sure but for 5 years the Isles and Flames (expansion brethren) rotated Calder winners- Flames won in 75 and 77, with I think Lysiak being 2nd in 74
Flames then won 3 times in 5 years (86,88,90) but didn't come particularly close in the intervening years- Wilson and Hrdina got votes, Fleury came up too late in 89
Iggy and Morris were 2nd and 5th
Johnny and Monahan 3 and 8
Phaneuf and Lombardi 3 and 12
best I can do

What does your lineup look like up-front?
Huberdeau - Kadri - Klapka
Coleman - Backlund - Coronato
Sharangovich - Frost - Farabee
Lomberg - Zary - Pospisil
That's 11 top 9 forwards. Unless you see Klapka, and Pospisil as 4th liners.
--- Might need a spot within 2 years:
Kerins, Morton, Honzek, Stromgren, Suniev
3 years: Gridin, Basha, Battaglia, Misa(?).
That's without adding anyone or re-signing any of the Flames UFAs in Mantha, Kirkland, or Rooney.
The way I see it 2 of Coleman, Sharangovich, Farabee, Pospisil, and Klapka will need to move on within a year. That's why Coleman seems like the easiest choice because of his age.

Calder race could be really good next year
Candidates:
D: Parekh, Buium, Dickinson, Nikishin
F: Demidov, Leonard
G: Mabye Cossa
Could be a great crop and race

Why would we blow our assets and money on Knies who is a LW?

I would love for them to take a run at Rossi. Big fan.
But I think he's also likely a #2 centre. So you still need the #1.
But that's OK.
Near-term you run Kadri-Rossi-Frost-Backlund
And then yadda yadda get your #1 centre to replace Kadri eventually.
It's just that easy.

Offer sheet Bedard if it doesn't look like we will completely bottom out into a lottery team.

Not sure if this was shared, but Sharks open to trading their 1st round pick.

What would it be worth? Do the Flames have anything they can put together?
Centre Michael Misa looks really interesting. Teammate of Parekh, brother of Flames prospect Luke Misa. 134p in 65gp.

Flames don't have any running backs to offer
Seriously, teams that underperform in the next two weeks might consider trading core pieces
If Dallas bombs out, would they consider moving Mikko Rantanen again?
Toronto and Winnipeg have to make noise these playoffs or changes need to happen. Probably Edmonton as well, but they don't have desirable pieces after the two goofs
Rangers need to move pieces. Would the Bruins consider full tear down and move their top guys?
I hope this happens. Makes the draft so much more fun

Huby - Bedard - Coronato
Yes please! I’d give up 3 x 20 overall picks for that. Is that really all it would cost?

Rantanen has a full NMC he’s not waiving for calgary.
Toronto players are free agents and Winnipeg really had nothing to move n
