no if he got the ball it wouldn't even be a foul

Unless the ref is Howard Webb, than its probly still a penalty

Agreed. My all-time favourite sportswriter(opinion writer anyway). I grew up reading his SI articles, he is a golden god. That mag just isn't the same since Reilly jumped to ESPN(and Rushin left too).

Wasn't it just a couple years ago that a Calgary sportswriter got canned for basically plagiarising a Reilly SI article? Maybe it was an Edmonton writer, I've lived here too long..

More about Soccer in general than the World Cup, but regardless this is a good read.

I don't think I even have to read the article to know the recycled jokes and obvious pandering to the US audience.

Hopefully Korea can grind out a draw against Argentina. I would love to see them get through to the round of 16.

Screw that - take the win! I would love to see them get through and to see Maradona weep like a little girl on the sidelines.

Hmmm brain is telling me to bet on Argentina but the payout is almost not even worth it. South Korea is 7-1 and a draw at 3-1 is almost but not quite tempting enough to bet against Messi and co.

It's a tough one. I would learn toward Korea (+1) just to have a buffer. Not sure Argentina can score alot of goals against an organized Korean defense. Or Argentina (-1) if you're feeling confident. Gotta go that way cause betting Argentina at 1.20 is silly.

Wasn't able to address this earlier.

I feels harsh cause it's a terrible rule. It was implemented in the 90s because defenders would purposely hack down guys on breakaways outside the box and get sometimes a yellow card for it. Then the free kick would be wasted. So they thought a red card would stop defenders from doing this, creating more goal-scoring opportunities. I like that part of the rule but to apply it inside the penalty area and for keepers is pretty stupid.

You'll remember this one. Watch this play from the 1998 World Cup England against Argentina.

Watch the penalty at 6:20. A stricter ref could have sent Seaman off and totally ruined the game 5 minutes into it. But since it was more to the side compared to the one today and not directly in front of goal the ref decided that it was just a yellow.

Stupid rule to apply automatic red cards in the box

Or here is another scenario, how would you rule this?

Argentina strikes early, own goal by korean defender who didn't know what hit him, literally.

Tevez with one of the hardest strikes I've ever seen. Just over the bar.

Korea gets a lifeline at the end of the half - brutal brain fart by the defender.

That was about as thorough of a dismantling of a team I have seen and Korea is extremely lucky to only be one down.

Dismantling is a bit harsh. Argentina goals were from an own goal and a nice set play (flick on). Argentina looks good stroking it around but still can't really finish.

First 15 minutes of the 2nd half will be interesting.

It's been a pretty thorough dismantling so far. Korea has basically had nothing except for a really awful play by the Argentina defender. All types of danger coming in wave after wave the other way though.
