I agree, for this year. But I think it could happen next year.
Imagine a scenario where we sign Rantanen or Boeser:
Huberdeau - Kadri - Boeser
Sharangovich/Honzek - Zary - Coronato
Farabee - Frost - Pospisil
Coleman - Backlund - Honzek/Sharngovich
Klapka/Stromgren
That is a deep team. And Backlund's line isn't a 4th line, so much as a defensive line - lots of PK time, defensive zone starts, and other heavy lifting. With 3 other lines that can all push the play.

If the intent is to have frost and farabee part of the new core long term, makes sense to paid them with another long term fixture - coronato.

He still hasn't gotten back up to speed after his injury. Look at his skating tracking in NHL Edge. His metrics are significantly worse this year than last across the board.

For now.
Huberdeau, Kadri, Zary, Coronato, Frost, and Farabee are all going to be ahead of he and Coleman next year (offensively). I would argue Sharagovich should be (and will be).
Add someone in free agency, and have one player graduate, and suddenly Backlund and Coleman are likely down around 9th or 10th in offence among forwards, next year.

The effort is there with Lombo too and Klapka looks good early into this call up, Backs wouldn’t be out of place with them IMO because Backs isn’t out of place with anyone.
|
Lomberg and Klapka play less than 10 minutes a game. More time for the 4th line takes away time from the others, and they don't need to be playing much more than that. So Backlund on the 4th line makes the line better, but Backlund getting 7 or 8 fewer Even Strength shifts a game doesn't make the team better.

With the acquisition of Farabee and Frost, Kerins!' NHL window just closed (at least with the Flames). By next year, Honzek, Stromgren, and maybe guys like Gridin will have passed him.

But that is the whole point though. Kadri is number one. Frost is younger, scores more, better skater, is sound defensively no reason to think he wouldnt be a better backlund snd pull some more of the second unit powerplay at the very least. Frost is going to surprise people and it will cut into backs ice time especially if his line gels and plays well.
Having Zary show very well as a center as an organization short on centers it should be a priority to keep giving a promising young center more ice time again that will affect Backs.
All of these assumptions of Backs on the fourth line seem to be making an assumption that the replacement couldnt possibly be better?

Nah, we should consider flipping Wolf as well, he's going to be on the wrong side of 24 when his contract comes up. #### em all unless they're 19 or younger.

Some people under-rate Backlund around here. No question about that. I do not think I am one of them - I get what Backlund brings.
Having said that, Frost is arguably as good as Backlund right now, all things considered. Given a fresh start, and new opportunity, there is a chance he takes another step, but even if he doesn't, he will be a better C than Backlund next year.
I don't think we push Backlund down the lineup this year, but it's coming, and it's a pretty likely scenario by next year.
And that's a good thing. If Backlund is our #4 C next year, the team will have a very deep forward group.

Just in sheer naming terms...down a Russian and Frenchman but 'Frost' and 'Farabee?'
Just so good. Can you imagine if Farabee is having a monster game and the whole crowd at the Dome is chanting
"FARABEE! FARABEE!!"
And a hockey player named Frost? You gotta be kidding me with this. I'm sure his nickname is Frosty and while we lament unoriginal hockey nicknames I mean....come on! What else are you going to go with?

Conroy will almost certainly want to have a RHS centreman on the team next year so that makes this discussion about the deployment of the Cs somewhat moo.

Zary being pushed as a centre is because the organization is short on centres. The team's three best centres have gone from Kadri, Backlund, and Zary, to Kadri, Backlund, and Frost.
Moving Backlund to 4th line centre keeps less productive wingers in the Top 9, which isn't the best way to utilize the team, given a guy like Zary can perform well on the wing (his best linemates have been Backlund and Coleman).

You've got to love Conroy's asset management here. The whole point of stockpiling picks and prospects is to create depth and be able to flip them for areas of need. I really liked Pelletier but this was probably his highest value in the last 2-3 years so taking advantage of that is fantastic!
The Flames have a pretty good group of young forwards on the team (Coronato, Zary, Frost, Farabee, Pospisil, Klapka) and quite a few prospects waiting in the wings that are 1-4 years away. Add some draft picks to that in the next few years and they can create a great development pipeline for inserting into the lineup or trading for areas of need.

I would maybe buy that take if we had decent 4th line center. We dont.
I also dont think pushing another winger to center in pospisil is a good approach either. Roll four lines whoever kine is having the best night give them more ice time. Depth wins games and series.

I don’t think there’s a need to discount Zary as a centre, just because the team also has Frost now. Zary was drafted as a centre, and he is an effective, playmaking NHL centre. He is also a good player on the wing. Fortunately, I think that gives the team flexibility to use him in either position as needed.
