Why weren't they wanting to trade someone who everyone seems to think is a terrible player?

Even with the benefit of hindsight there can’t be that many trades in the history of the league where if you polled a thousand or more fans on a do-over you would get zero votes in favour of the original trade.

Id still make the trade.
Huberdeau, Weegar, 1st, Schwindt is still a crazy return for a guy who didnt want to be here and was only willing to sign with 2-3 teams.
Now would I have traded that first to get rid of Monahan to sign Kadri - nope.
And would I have signed Huberdeau to $10.5M in hindsight - nope.
But Id still make the initial trade, and with hindsight I would have signed Weegar and flipped Huberdeau.

There were signs that Florida was going to part ways with Huberdeau regardless. They apparently delayed contract extension talks even though Huberdeau's agent was trying to initiate them. I think Florida realized after his inability to move up a gear in the playoffs, he wasn't someone to invest in for another 8 years at a superstar level salary, especially given his age. When the opportunity to get Tkachuk came up, I doubt they thought twice about it.

Where were these signs?
The trade happened on July 25th, and conversations would have started well before that.
Huberdeau still had a year left on his contract, and the very earliest that they could have started negotiations for a new contract were July 1st. Obviously, the GM is going to be very busy through the first couple weeks of July. So there would have been a small window of week or two at most for them to have started talks - and who knows? maybe they did.
You're going purely on hindsight and your own bias here.

They stalled because of the Tkachuk trade not because they didn't want him.
And for all the people crying about a redo in the result is the same Sutter is fired.
So you can't ask for a redo without the big element in keeping Tkachuk that is firing Sutter.

Treliving made that trade knowing and with full intention of signing him to that contract
There was no two parts. He never thought about flipping him
Unless Huberdeau turns around, it’s a bad to horrible trade because that extra first allows him to sign Kadri also

This is the Flames, they did not need an extra first to sign Kadri. We have consistently trade firsts throughout the last 7 years. The Huberdeau trade had nothing to do with the Kadri signing.

According to Walsh, he approached Zito at the draft about getting an extension done as soon as possible and Zito asked him to let him get through the 1st week of free agency first, then he would reach out to get the contract done. The Tkachuk news came out on July 20th. The next time Zito called Walsh was when the trade was made. That was right from the interview with Walsh after the trade. So even before it was known that Tkachuk was available, Zito wasn't exactly banging down the door.
I can't imagine that a GM would delay like that if they thought the player was integral to the franchise and the player was also aching to get it done. GMs do more than one thing at once all the time, so I don't think there is an excuse to go cold like that. Treliving for example, didn't stop all other managerial work while hammering out Huberdeau's contract.

You're just making things up to fit your narrative.
If Zito had no intention of signing him, why ask to get through the free agency week first? Also, you have no idea whether or not they spoke again before the trade. As for Treliving, he was HIGHLY motivated to get the deal done, and it still took 10 days, even though the frantic pace of early July was well behind them.

Just to play the other cards
Traded from a city you played your whole professional career in, you loved it there
Sign a huge contract larger than winning a lottery
Now in a market with scrutiny much greater than you’ve ever experienced
Expectations placed upon your team and yourself like you’ve never experienced before
Exotic sports cars to a pickup because it’s necessary
Your off time in a golf dome instead of a fairway
Must be quite an adjustment
Then a coach that demands professionalism
I wouldn’t be totally shocked if the exact same group returned next year with much better results

I seriously can’t handle this site sometimes.
Florida isn’t making the playoffs I don’t think.
We aren’t either.
But Tkachuk didn’t want to be here. Sutter didn’t help that. But Matthew said many times. I knew I was done after my last contract. He was mad.
I don’t care how good he looks. He isn’t winning them anything.
Huberdeau looks bad yes. But let’s give it another year before we label him a complete bust.

Again Darryl putting them blame on the players and not taking any ownership at all like he has all season.
When the supposed leader of the team never takes any blame what do you expect from the players.

Sure. But anyone who has watched that team play this year knows that chemistry is one the biggest problems. I’ve said it over and over. They played for each other last year. Bought in. The year before that how did it go ? Kinda looked very similar. Everyone was ready to trade away Tkachuk and Johnny cause they were done.

How do you explain leading the league in shots for and against?

I hear what you’re saying
But
If you listen to the players who are having a good year like Andersson, Weegar and Toffoli and the relative silence from the other newcomers, Sutters comments make some sense
He’s not throwing anyone under the bus
He’s saying it will take some time

After Lucic’s comments about the top guys and Coleman saying that individuals need to take a look in the mirror and be happy with their performance, there is probably something to the lack of player-player chemistry Sutter is talking about
