I have a theory that they liked the Laurent Broissoit pick (even though they traded him away), so they used the same rationale for Mason McDonald.
The Flames said similar things about both of them after they were drafted. Both were athletic, relied on positioning, and improved during the season. Both were bound to get a lot of games in the following year.
McDonald had better numbers during his draft year. He would have been a fine pick, but not in the early second round. Especially when guys like Demko, Nedeljkovic and Vanecek were on the board (all of them went just a few picks later).

McDonald was taken in the order and in the range where he was expected to go. Goalies are voodoo, you just don't have a clue where it goes after draft day.
Two goalies in that range, Calgary just got the wrong one.

Updated the rankings with Dobber's update ... with that and a few refreshes of existing lists we are starting to see some separation in the Flames pick area.
If you believe in the consensus Raty and Lambos are slipping a bit, with Lysell, McTavish, Lucius and Sillinger in a tight band.
Guys rising in refreshed lists are Zellweger (60) and Jack Peart (48). Both could be in play for Calgary's second round pick.

I don't mean to pile on to the McDonald pick was bad ... I mean he was/is a kid who wanted to make his dream come true, I just don't believe blaming kids for not turning out the way adults want..
BUT
Does anyone else remember a FlamesTV interview video with McDonald after (maybe the next year) where the video described some of his training - and it was his dad throwing baseballs at him that McDonald would catch with his trapper?
I could be mis-remembering, I could be making a dumb point, it could be a situation where coaching for goalie development is so expensive that some can't afford it... but I just did not expect that kind of training for an elite athlete (already drafted). I expected something more professional.
The mental attitude is extremely important in development IMO. The people at the top of professions take things very seriously, very early on. You can be a fun loving person but that maturity to do things right all the time - to delay instant gratification is really important. And what do I know about McDonald and what happened with his development? Maybe that training video was not indicative and other reasons caused him not to make it to NHL. Again the training just seemed so... lacking.

Wheeler's mock draft is up on the Athletic. He has the top consensus group going as the top group, Chicago taking the Swedish goalie, and Sillinger for the Flames:

I am 100% fine the Flames taking Wallstedt. Sure sounds like a heck of a prospect. Looking around at the NHL and seeing some of these young goalies just dominating right now is cool, and Wallstedt sounds like he is in the same conversations as some of the higher-end ones were at his age. Wouldn't complain at all, even with Wolf and Parsons (who I am one of the few it seems that still really believes this kid can make it).
If you have a chance to grab an elite player, you do it.
People bring up MacDonald as some proof that the Flames suck at drafting, or drafting goalies - but MacDonald was right there too with Demko. He was the consensus #2, but IIRC, some lists had him ahead of Demko. Yeah, hindsight proved that to not be the case, but if you go back and read scouting reports and watch some of the available video, MacDonald looked like a legitimate shot at a future starter, on par or very close to Demko, and ahead of everyone else.
The bigger question for me is "Why didn't it work out?"
Was it scouting? Are the Flames not strong enough at scouting goalies and being able to translate them properly enough for the NHL game?
Was it development? Are the Flames not a strong enough organization at goalie development? What are they doing/not doing that other teams are, or doing better? I was never high on Gillies (watching him at the NCAA level always left me wanting for more). However, there is a long line of goalies in the organization that haven't made it, or were given-up on early who then went on to make it - so what did the Flames not see at the time? Why are some teams a 'goalie factory'? Why can't the Flames be one of those teams?
What's with the injuries? I doubt that there is much here, but maybe the Flames should take deeper look at how they are managing goalies' workloads, and doing enough to be proactive in preventing injuries from happening, and making sure a goalie is 100% before returning and working him back in properly? I have no idea, but maybe there is something here.

Hoo boy. If Kent Johnson made it past the Canucks and fell even further down to the Flames pick, if I was tree I'm bolting for the podium, no class, no decorum, just repeating Kent Johnson Kent Johnson as I get Closer to the stage and then the mic and then just out of breath wheezing saying his name one more time too close to the mic so it's super bassy and muffled. And then collapse as the rest of the Flames staffers get to the stage.
You know, like a coked out Will Ferrel.
