Lots of Oilers fans in here thinking the Flames won the trade because they got the guys who were higher picks

Draft position does not matter this far down the line.

I'd be lying if I said I watched many Carolina games last year but by all accounts, today's Lindholm is marginally better than today's Ferland at best.

Hamilton is miles better than Hanifin is today.

Yes the Flames got the better contracts, but the hockey ability of the team has been lessened as a result of this trade.

Maybe Hamilton is a locker room cancer and the team improves from his subtraction but the value should have still been better.

Judging from what Treliving said in his interview I think he probably had a conversation with Gio to get an idea on whether he preferred playing with Hamilton or Brodie. I'm thinking he prefers Brodie.

Although Hamilton had good chemistry with Gio on ice they seem to have polar opposite personalities.

I know on first-hand authority that Bennett is not taking his off season training seriously... Expect a similar season from him if he stays.

Oh that's nice, people who are OK with the deal are oiler fans now?

Get lost with that crap.

Lindholm is not only better than Ferland and can be locked up long term as part of the core, but he's also exactly what we need. A top 6 forward with a right hand shot who can play wing or center.

Hamilton is better than Hanifin, but Hanifin is 3 years younger, can also be locked in long term and still has tremendous upside.

that's why people like this deal, and it doesn't make them oiler fans.

Last three seasons:

Sam Bennett has 69 points in 2978 5v5 minutes
Elias Lindholm has 58 points in 3178 5v5 minutes

The difference in what you are calling "consistently reliable"?

Elias Lindholm is 2nd on the Carolina Hurricanes in PP TOI (probably because he's a RHS) over that period with 574 minutes of PP TOI logged. You can safely assume he was playing with first unit players like Aho, Staal, Skinner, and Teravainen over that period.

Sam Bennett is 5th on the Calgary Flames among forwards in PP TOI over that period with 355 minutes of PP TOI logged. While he did spend time with Backlund, he spent limited PP time with Gaudreau, Monahan, or Tkachuk when he was out there.

Perhaps the fact that Bennett's potential power play roles are saturated by guys like Gaudreau, Monahan, Backlund, and Tkachuk has something to do with why you think Lindholm is a better player.

Because based on production in a situation that isn't based on a coach's whim (5 on 5) favours Sam Bennett - even though he spent long periods of that time dragging around Marcus Granlund, Troy Brouwer, Lance Bouma, Garnet Hathaway, Alex Chiasson, Curtis Lazar, etc AND was a year younger than Lindholm in the same period.

Is 22 and still on the way up. Has actually been able to prove he can play center if needed.
Which center led our team in 5v5 scoring in the 2017 playoffs? Who was our 3C for that entire season en route to the playoffs despite some hodgepodge line construction? What does it mean to you to be "able to prove one can play center if needed" when Bill Peters allegedly jerked him around to the wing for his entire career and intends to start him at wing next season? Is it faceoffs? Because Bennett himself was 54.3% there last year.

Gets pretty annoying to see people disparage Bennett. He's in tough on a team with some really good LHS forwards ahead of him on the power play, and he's gotten dealt a pretty weak hand in terms of linemates whilst playing for a coach who was obviously pretty toxic for his confidence.

Ferland would be a 3rd or 4th liner on any team with reasonable depth at RW and have the stats to match. Lets not kid ourselves

Especially when the players didn't want to sign with their previous team...its like asking a guy how awesome his ex girlfriend that just dumped him is.

Has to be fun trying to dig up every ounce of evidence to conclude a negative stance.

The Flames just got better. Now and for the future.
If you don't see it that way, god help you.

Sure I read somewhere earlier that of Lindholm's 44 points, 35(ish) of them were 5 on 5 as well.
