You've just been on a roll lately.

I don't think Gulutzan is the right guy to lead this team forward at all. If this happens and he fails it's going to be bad for Treliving. Is there something going on with the Flames we don't know about? All the high profile established coaches signed elsewhere.

It's a little irritating that the scoop on the Flames coaching job is given to some Vancouver schlubs and not our local media.

Greg Gulutzen:

2011–13 NHL: 0.527 winning percentage in two seasons—one of which was lockout shortened.

We do not yet have a good read on Gulutzen's quality as a NHL coach, but to compare him to Gilbert is preposterous. He is demonstrably a MUCH better coach, and it is not even close.
I hope Gulutzen turns out to be great but that analysis is thin.

I think it's fair to be underwhelmed by his track record but clearly if he's the guy, he's not being hired based on the winning percentages of teams he has coached.

Your 2nd sentence is true no matter who we hire.

It's interesting that the Penguins won two Cups with in season coaching changes. They do seem to yield results. Presumably Treliving felt better about the candidates available now than the fat more limited pool during the season.

No the Flames won't owe them anything. They dropped that silly rule this past off season.

Once I heard the Flames were going off the board I was ready to be underwhelmed. I trust Treliving and this is a huge hire for him. I have no doubt all the background work was done and they feel this is the guy.

My only beef is how horrible the Canucks have been since AV left and how badly the Flames out coached the Canucks in the playoffs last year.

Impossible. No coach in the history of coaching in the past, present, or future can match the pure level of crappiness that Gilbert is. Just not possible.

Both would likely want to keep their assistant coach roles over ours. Especially Reirden, playing under Trotz and a good team.

Assistant coaches typically have little input on how a head coach determines to operate a team. Gulutzan was assigned tasks by Desjardins but far to many of you are putting too much blame on the Canucks record on his assistants. It Willies ship.

Yes. The Flames WEREN'T looking fora a "high profile established" coach.

Simple.

Kind of par for the course when two of the Flames longtime beat writers are laid off.

The Canucks are likely very happy that it's Gulutzan is the man the Flames are taking and not Green who will likely be the next Canucks head coach and won't push their luck.
