The $250 million will be collected from ticket buyers. That's not just calling it a ticket tax, it IS a ticket tax. No building = no tickets; no tickets = no tax.
The fact of the matter is, the owners will charge for tickets whatever the market will bear. The market will not pay more simply because part of it is labelled as a tax. If you buy a $90 ticket with a $10 tax, you've spent $100. If the tax goes away, the owners charge $100 outright, because they already know people will pay that.
In effect, the owners will forgo part of their future revenue in exchange for financing up front. It's a way of putting a mortgage on the facility without calling it that.

This is honestly where they should've been 2-3 years ago.
If they want the City involved, the sooner someone like CMLC can take over the better. East Village is how it's done right.
|
Ya, no kidding. This should have been set up with CMLC years ago and had CS&E just tell them how much area they need to do a complex like this. CMLC should have master planned the community first before CS&E comes out with a building proposal concept like this that's not even well thought out beyond it's internal contents.

If you aren't sitting in seats provided by a large corporation, your experience will be only marginally better in a new arena IMO.

Exactly. You eliminate the cheap seats

The City of Calgary has set up a West Village remediation plan to develop west village which would result in the remediation of the creosite land...
Also, KK never said the Flames would pay for the remediation. So the City/Prov are paying anyway

Not cynical. Just not impressed.
Calgarians, you are being sold a load of bunk today, from a slickster-hickster ad man.
The city can do better than this complicated, mish-mash utility concept. Pretty second rate. Thank goodness it's just a trial balloon.

I know they are crude renderings, but both the inside of the arena and fieldhouse look pretty dopey. Either the picture is exagerating the heights of the box seats or the top bowl will be worse than the Sportchek zone at the Dome.
Looks like they are trying to appease everyone and kind of get a jack of all trades building, master of none.
Just build a nice hockey arena and football stadium.

King's answer to the arena capacity question keeps going up. During the lunch hour session, it was 18,500 to 19,500. Now, it's 19,000 to 20,000.
At this rate, by the time it opens, it will be bigger than the Bell Centre.

Don't use this board as your barometer.....lot of whiners in here who wouldn't have liked it unless KK personally delivered a cheque to their front door and told them the Flames were also footing the whole bill.

Wouldn't a team like that have lease payments and then the city would have expenses like repairs and interest on loans, but overall still make money?
I would imagine if a company operates there, its' like renting out commercial space, no?

The arena concept looks like a mix of hockey arena seating and the staples centre during the oscars. Is that something to do with the "first of its kind" point and the mention of improved sightlines, and "upper bowl will be better"?
I care far more about details of the arena than the rest of the project and it sucks that there are merely crumbs right now for Flames fans specifically, who are being called on to pitch a good portion for this project.
I want details on this supposed revolutionary arena. We don't need pictures right now, but more informative details on the arena itself should've been shared with this, especially for something that's been worked on and under wraps for so long.

Who is putting up the money? The city? In Edmonton the city is putting it up. That's what I was asking. The money has to come from someone up front to be RECOUPED by a ticket tax.
I know what a ticket tax is thank you very much.
