I'd say it's tough to get a read on some these guys who play on a terrible team. I think he's better than his numbers.
Same thing with Ristolainen, imagine coming to the league and you are surrounded with crap and every year the season is over by Christmas.
Must be really demoralizing especially for a young guy.

The weird thing about Lehner is that we still don't know that. Haven't seen him in an environment where he can succeed.

You just need capable guys with energy to plug in to those holes.
Gaudreau - Monahan
Tkachuk - 2C Acquisition
Frolik - Backlund
Is a better set up than the current line chart with an overpaid RW upgrade plugged in there.
But might be able to address both. Who knows.
|
Realistically I think we need to make 2 moves to bolster our top 6 depth and scoring from the front line. Both a center and a RHS scoring winger, RW would be awesome but perhaps even a RHS center who can move to the wing (Tyler Johnson from TB) for example.
Gaudreau - Monahan - _____ Scoring winger
Tkachuk - 2C Acquisition - ______ - Ferland perhaps?
Bennett?_____ - Backlund - Frolik - Shutdown line w/ Scoring power
_____ - Shore - Lazar - 4th line Energy line
Pipe dream would be JT and then our top 2 lines would be more like a 1a - 1b

I think Smith is fine with Rittich or Gillies as a backup to bridge the gap until Parsons is ready. He had some nagging injury issues last year which hurt him a bit but I still think he is on pace to be our starter in as early as two years.

Tavares and Tarasenko playing together would be frightening.

To that point, if Tavares moves I think this will be great for the Flames even if Tavares doesn't end up a Flame.
Whichever team lands Tavares will likely look to move a top 6 forward (Center or Wing) to make room and that may present the Flames with an opportunity to move a guy like Brodie for second line help.

Because there is no issue IMO. Smith is great. The other two were promising young rookies. Seems obvious to stick with the same group for next year.

This is pretty disingenuous when they have TJ freaking Oshie as their second line RW

Their top line RW has the fewest goals in these playoffs of all their RWs.
Wilson - 5
Oshie - 8
Connolly - 6
Smith-Pelly - 6

Yeah just like posters are being silly when they say you can’t win a cup with Ferland as your #1 RW. You’d think if people watch the NHL they’d realize teams no longer stack their three most skilled forwards on one line.
Ferland is a great fit on the #1 line stylistically because he compliments what Gaudreau and Monahan lack while still having enough skill to play with them. He wins board battles, crashes the net while still having the shot and passing to not drag Gaudreau and Monahan down. He brings some strength and physicality to a line that would otherwise lack those elements.
Those saying Ferland is a problem on the #1 line are clueless IMO. The real problem last year was not the #1 line. The real problem was that we had a #1 line, a checking line, a line filled with struggling young players who had lost their offensive confidence and a grinding/energy line that couldn’t score. GG failed to construct more than one solid scoring line. We probably need another top 6 forward to help create that second scoring line (and to move Tkachuk off the checking line).
This fixation by a couple people on Ferland being a problem is bizarre and shortsighted. Makes no sense to me. Gaudreau can’t win a board battle to save his life so you’re gonna want somebody on that line who can. Ferland and Tkachuk are the only options so far IMO.

Actually read what was said though. He said no team was winning with Ferland as their top RW, not no team is winning if Ferland is on the top line. I agree, and I think nearly everyone would that if Ferland is your best RW, you're in trouble. Better be making up for that in a big way elsewhere, but the Flames aren't.

Blues might need to reassure their fanbase that they're not standing pat or spinning their wheels. Maybe they saw a dip in season tickets, etc.

Risto and Lehner would likely be quite good (Risto would likely be exceptional) if they were part of a very good team with a winning atmosphere.
I'd take them on the Flames in a second.
I doubt that GM's would be underrating Risto.
Lehner I'm not as sure on though, that's more of a guess LOL.

From my viewings of lehner, he lets in some soft goals. While he does seem to have a fiesty competitive ness to his game, i find that he struggles with consistency so much in his games. He will have moments of looking extremely good. Then in the next 5 minutes 2 softies go by. I think if game to gamr he had better consistency. He would be a player

I am still of the belief that GG was bad at line matching or however you want to define it. When he just had to roll his lines on the road he didn’t have to think about it. At home he had to respond to who the opposing coach sent out and I feel he had poor judgment on the best matchups.

I don't think Smith and Lehner would make great partners - too much alike in terms of personality
