Local Fox affiliate out of Philly did a piece on the murdrer tonight, I'm not going to post it, going to leave it out of the thread but one detail in the story was that Guy and Jane Gaudreau visited the memorial at Honeydell Arena in Sewell, apparently staying for a considerable length of time. Cannot imagine what they'e going through

The drunk driver was a member of the US Army - field artillery officer and New Jersey National Guard.
As someone who has many family members in different positions in the US Army, what a ####ing disgrace.
There are no words. Makes my blood boil even more.
Here's the kicker, he also worked for a Rehab Facility. How ironic.

And when a drunk guy says 5 or 6 beers they mean 10 or 12
not to mention trying to pass on the right was just being an entitled #######...he was probably the type to do it sober

The thread title still bothers me. They didn’t pass away.
They were murdered. The driver was charged for murder.

I was the one that edited it. I did so after I learned early that morning that they were the confirmed victims.
I don't think putting 'murdered' in the thread title is going to accomplish anything positive. It's not a gotcha thread title and this isn't TMZ, we can all read the thread and follow along and understand what happened. They are not with us anymore, that's all the thread title is trying to accomplish.

He was not charged with murder. He was charged with death by auto. It's night and day different.

13 in the rafters is obvious (I’d be shocked if it doesn’t happen).
I’m hoping for the main road leading to the new arena to be Gaudreau Street/Avenue/Dive/Way/etc.

A message from Iggy:

I always wished we could've seen both Jarome and Johnny play together

Murder is just a legal term that implies intent. They weren’t murdered and the driver wasn’t charged with murder.
Adding it to the thread title does nothing but add sensational falsehoods to the story.
I think the way it is now is respectful and gets the message across.

Bikes and automobiles have always had a tough relationship but we find a way to work together. Add alcohol to the equation and things get ugly quickly.
I feel terrible for his family.
A few years ago I took my daughter to a Flames practice. They were doing some drills and one of the players yelled C'mon Johnny. Since then we have always used C'mon Johnny when the situation is appropriate.
I have not told her Johnny is gone. I hope we keep using the "C'mon Johnny".
Life isn't always fair but Johnny had a helluva ride while it lasted.

Yes, there is a legal definition of murder - and this is not it.
What this is, should have a very significant penalty, of course - likely much more than this guy is actually going to get.
But it's not a murder.

Thanks everyone.
I read this thread every day and it's been amazing to keep up with what Calgary has done as a response, as well as his former teammates, and the rest of the hockey world.
I've honestly had no clue what to say.
Just in disbelief.

I took my family down to the memorial at about 4:30 on Friday when it was about half this size. Going to the memorial didn't make me feel better, but now that I know Meredith saw it, I'm glad I went and contributed to it. Feels like a bit of a loop is closed now. I was impressed by the respectful silence there. My 6 year old kept telling me that it'll be OK dad when I shed some tears and sniffled. Even my three-year-old was respectful, despite constantly asking what all the juice was for, and if he could eat some the Skittles. The news media was there, but no one was hounding fans for interviews. I went and had a nice chat with Ryan Leslie though - that poor guy was gutted, but still faced the cameras throughout the day.
I certainly wasn't expecting this much national and international attention this would get. It feels like an intensely local tragedy, but clearly our sadness is shared by millions everywhere. This will certainly take some time, at least for me. Extraordinarily sad.

I think this touches on an important aspect of this and grief in general that might be overlooked and maybe misunderstood for some people.
One of the worst parts of loss is the feeling or idea that the person didn’t know how you truly felt. That you have a lot of untapped love you could have shared but didn’t, for whatever reason. And sometimes, part of getting over that feeling is letting someone else know. They’ll never be able to pass on the message, but you feel less alone and, hopefully, the people closest to them know that they aren’t alone.
This memorial has been incredible for that, and I think it’s what a lot of the talk of jersey retirement stems from. Yes, it’ll happen, and yes, people need to be patient and wait for the right time, but people reminding others of these things also need to remember that in all of this, people are just trying to feel less alone in their grief and love and get that message across.
None of us will be at the funeral. We’ll never get that closure. So being able to do whatever we can to make sure that message is seen, felt, and passed as far along as it can be, helps bring closure.

I'm confident the Flames organizations will do right by Johnny just like the fans have done.
Meredith is right, Calgary is a special place, I've not lived there for over 30 years but I sure am proud to have been from Calgary. For those of you who went down to the dome, or just paid your respects in some way. Well done.

Per Flames app:
Plans for a tribute will be announced later. With the Kings of Leon concert tonight, the memorial will be moved to the grassy hill north of the stairs (and anything being left by people should be placed there as well going forward).
