Also have to add I think the one player they must get is Michael Brantley. He won’t come at a super inflated cost to handcuff the team down the road, and even if they have to overpay by giving him an extra year it’ll probably be a two or three year deal at a reasonable salary. He fits one of the things they need (ability to get on base). Really solid guy to have on a team that lacks discipline at the plate.

Before Shohei Ohtani signed the most lucrative contract in U.S. professional sports history, baseball's two-way superstar put together yet another season of unparalleled brilliance from Tokyo to Anaheim.

What can this singular talent possibly do next? The Los Angeles Dodgers are eagerly paying $700 million to see for themselves.

But what Ohtani already did in 2023 -- both for the Los Angeles Angels and for Japan in the World Baseball Classic -- is the reason he was selected as The Associated Press' Male Athlete of the Year for the second time in three years.

He turns 37 a month into the season and is coming off major should surgery that he struggled to come back from. I would hope a 2-3 year deal or anything more than a bench role isn't in the cards for him as there's not much tread left on those tires.

Agreed. More for a platoon position more than anything. On days you really need that run in him coming as a pinch hitter could be really valuable. Weird to say that about a player of that purpose but I think he’d be very valuable.

I could see Brantley being interested. His dad played for the Cannons for parts of five seasons and then was the Jays hitting coach for three seasons around when he was in his late teens so there's gotta be some familiarity with the team/city/market on a personal level.

Yamamoto to the Dodgers, 12 year $325 million

Awesome

I was hoping for one of Ohtani, Yama or Soto and they all went to NY or LA

What fun

Next year there is supposed to be another young superstar Japanese player being posted.

Can't remember his name but he supposed to be incredible.

Should be exciting watching him sign in either NY or ####ing LA

Can't wait

Ha. On the plus side. Theres a very real chance this could blow up in the Dodgers face and be a 1billion dollar mistake we all laugh about.

Yamamoto could be a pumpkin and Ohtani may never be an elite pitcher again.

One can dream.

If not. What a funny offseason full of old MLB tropes.

So I’m assuming he’s collecting 2M per season with 25M deferred to post retirement?

I'm kinda the same.

I mean Yamamoto has never pitched a single inning in MLB yet.

It'd be pretty funny if he sucked, or was average or something.

And if Ohtani never pitches more than 100 innings again I won't be sad at all.

But I'm very bitter right now

Imagine your team winning 100 games and then going out and adding Ohtani, Glasnow and Yamamoto who is projected to have ace stuff.

An interesting part is that he's 5'10. 5'10 righties haven't even got a look for mid d1 colleges and above or mlb drafts for a decade or two.

Are there any under 6' RH starters in mlb? Is he really that much better than all the shorter north american pitchers who've been ignored? Or were the scouts all wrong to ignore them all these years?

One thing though. Dodgers aren't getting all these guys by offering more. They're going to the Dodgers to play for the Dodgers. Salary cap isn't going to help change that.

Disagree. If there was a salary cap the Dodgers couldn't have them all, because they wouldn't have the cap room. All else equal Ohtani picks the Dodgers, but after they sign him all else wouldn't be equal for Yamamoto, because they wouldn't have the cap room. Maybe he wants to sign with the Dodgers but if they can't even get close to the best offer he'll sign elsewhere.

And in this case the Dodgers and Mets both offered the most money. He picked the Dodgers.

They need to do something with deferred salary too. If they're going to allow it there should be a limit on how much of a contract can be deferred. It's pretty obvious both Ohtani and the Dodgers worked on it for luxury tax purposes which is the closest thing to a salary cap MLB has right now.

Stroman is the only one I can think of (5'8").
