As an atheist, I have been reflecting a lot on the bible passage from romans 8:31 "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (preface - this is NOT an all sides, many sides defense) Both ends of the spectrum believe they are right. Both believe they have god and liberty and freedom on their side. And at this point most see the other side as an actual enemy. I am just not sure how we move past this divide. It is so very fundamental at this point. I often wonder if we just need something similar to the partition of British India.
Yeah, I think that another righteous element of the actions this week is some sort of bizarre faith that their side would persevere, without any real idea. Not just that their side is morally right, but that their side is destined to succeed. If you can get someone to believe that their actions are part of a plan, they won't question whether the big plan makes sense or is likely to succeed.
Regarding partitioning, I think the US to far too much of an urban/rural divide to ever entertain that. The people of, say, Atlanta, aren't going to be okay with being lumped into a more right-wing nation than they were before. Similarly, the people of rural Pennsylvania or Michigan. And no Americans from other side would accept any sort of relocation plan.

The mainstream right in Canada isn't as far gone as it is in the United States, so keep that in mind during these discussions and your interactions with Canadian conservatives. Per opinion surveys, 45% of Trump voters supported storming the Capitol and 70% (!!!) think Biden's election win was fraudulent. If that's not detached from reality, what is?
I don't know if this will honestly be true in a few years. I know lots of right wing people in Calgary, and they are starting to go to the same point on the scale as American right wingers.
That's the problem, there is no middle ground and those bubbles just suck these guys up and turn them into extreme right wingers in no time. Talking to them, they don't even discern between Canada and America, they just parrot whatever latest talking point is being pushed by the far right.
They tend to believe that these "anti-right" issues and conspiracies transcend borders.

it's still incredible to me that so many of these people not only showed their faces while committing crimes, but happily documented and uploaded them themselves. FBI and law enforcement must be in stitches.

I really hope so. I don't know why, part of me feels like only a select few will get charged, not every single identifiable person who entered the building, or ALL those who passed the fence line.
Hopefully I am way off based and many many people get charged for what they did.
This breakdown on who has "the authorization" to call the DC national guard in is another level of embarrassment to this entire thing.
I think we know Trump held it back, another reason for impeachment.

Yikes. Although this was assumed, it is quite jarring to hear the details from someone directly involved. Especially from the same political party. Even the body language of the general behind him nodding, they were in complete disbelief.

You're not a hard core Donald Trump supporter because you're smart.
I mean, you can be anti-abortion and vote for Republicans every election, and I don't agree with you, but I "get" it, and don't think you're inherently stupid because of it.
But if you genuinely believe Donald Trump has your best interests at heart, so much so that you think you can sack the capitol of the United States to overturn an election you're a total f-ing rube.

yeah, but skimming through those that have been identified, you'll also find lawmakers, college professors, business owners and so on. It's easy to dismiss these people as inherently stupid, and I'm sure some are. But I do think there's people among them that ought to know better but were completely brainwashed by consuming alternative "news" online.
I am guessing the capitol hill area has no shortage of cameras that are probably tied into all sorts or recognition software. Between all that and then footage from media and social media, a lot of people are f'd.
I would think having a federal crime on your record would be pretty detrimental to your career prospects. Might be a good time to apply to Chipotle in the USA, lots of job openings just came up.
Probably covered, but while the insurrection was happening, Trump and Giulani were still trying to call senators to get them to keep delaying.
.Trump first called the personal cell phone of Lee, a Utah Republican, shortly after 2 p.m. ET. At that time the senators had been evacuated from the Senate floor and were in a temporary holding room, as a pro-Trump mob began breaching the Capitol.
Lee picked up the phone and Trump identified himself, and it became clear he was looking for Tuberville and had been given the wrong number. Lee, keeping the President on hold, went to find his colleague and handed Tuberville his phone, telling him the President was on the line and had been trying to reach him.
The second call to Lee came in at 7 p.m. ET from Giuliani. Lee did not answer the call so it went to voicemail. Lee's office confirmed to CNN that the voicemail was intended for Tuberville and the message left from Giuliani was very similar to one that another unnamed GOP senator received. The transcript of that call was published by the news blog emptywheel.
"Sen. Tuberville? Or I should say Coach Tuberville. This is Rudy Giuliani, the President's lawyer," he said according to to the transcript.
"I'm calling you because I want to discuss with you how they're trying to rush this hearing and how we need you, our Republican friends, to try to just slow it down so we can get these legislatures to get more information to you," Giuliani said, referring to unfounded claims of voter fraud in the presidential election.
