The asking price for RoR is a 1st, 2nd, + good prospect according to LeBrun

So, how are we hearing what Johnson's contract signing will be, or that DSP turned down more lucrative offers to stay with Washington? I thought that teams can't talk contract terms with players during the courting period.

"Hey, you guys aren't supposed to be talking numbers during the discussion period..."

NHL GMs and agents...

It’s all with a wink and a nudge. How else do you explain signings being completed 5 minutes into free agency like we see every year?

By the letter of the rule they can't talk. That is why they text (probably not they just talk). It is the worst kept secret they have always done it. They came up with the interview process because players/agents and teams were already doing it previously. The interview process was a convenient way to justify those contracts that started rolling in 1 minute after FA started.

It's a rule that they can't talk contract, but apparently nobody follows the rule and it seems nobody cares that nobody follows the rule either.

Also, DSP can re-sign with WASH anytime he wants.

Or they write a number on a piece of paper, slide it across the table and say nothing...

I am proposing the term "negotiation window" to be used to describe the one week time period before NHL free agency from this point going forward.

I would put together a package for ROR like that but we need to lottery protect the 1st this time.

I wonder if 2019 lottery protected 1st plus Bennett would be enough for them to bite? I guess it depends on how they feel about Bennett.

Probably just play NHL 19 in GM mode with the player.

GM: "Oh, you have my phone number, right? It's 350-0000. I'll be home after 3."

Agent: "Are you sure? The number I have for you is 375-0000, and it says to call after 5."

GM: "My mistake. I am available after 5, but the best number to reach me at is 365-0000."

Fast forward to July 1: Player signs a 5 year deal with a $3.65 million cap hit five minutes after free agency opens and everyone is shocked that the negotiations were done so quickly.

... did you really think that they whipped up $50,000,000.00ish dollar contracts in 3 minutes before the courting period was allowed? C'mon man, I think we all know that the NHL Teams and Agents all collectively agree to a gentleman's agreement that tampering doesn't apply to upcoming free agents after the season is done.

I like to think of it as being a big game from the price is right.

The one where you have to guess if a number should be higher or lower. Then you get to the $$ value the player wants, and the term after playing the game.

The Flames can’t keep trading picks. We are not a contender that is a piece away from the cup. This team will have one of the worst prospect pools in the league if they keep bleeding picks. If the Flames gave up a first in a deal for say Nylander that is one thing but I don’t want them to do it for a 25+ year old player.

Normally I'd agree, but if it's for the right type of player I'd pull the trigger.

If they brought in ROR, once they extend Chucky we'd have 6 key forwards locked up long term to continually build around year after year, and 4 of them would be able to play top 6 center (Monahan, ROR, Lindholm, Backlund).

Also, I disagree that this team can't be a contender, especially after an off season where they hypothetically bring in Lindholm and ROR up front.

No, but we never got specifics before. We just heard speculation that team x is after player y. Then it happens. Now we're hearing the specifics that Johnson signed for. We're hearing that DSP turned down multiple offers. You'd think that teams would be more protective of their talks and/or more careful with who they disclose information to, both within their organization and to the media.

Someday somebody is going to go all Brian Burke on Kevin Lowe when their impending UFA goes somewhere else and we knew the details on the 1st day of courting period.

Every year there are these flavours of the month where they go for a ridiculously high price compared to what they bring, and it seems the only team who wins is the one who deals that player away. He's obviously more of a name brand, but until he becomes your primary scorer, to me there's no way he's worth that type of package. I think most GMs would be weary of paying that price but when it comes to measuring contests against other GMs, there's probably a sucker or two who will go for it. In a couple years he'll be on the decline anyway. To me he's worth a decent prospect and a 2nd rounder, but really highly overrated around the league.

He’s averaged 77 games / 59 points over the past 5 seasons. His 61 points last year puts top 5 on every team in this league aside from tampabay and in many case in the top 3 to 1.

He’s an elite faceoff man and has had the misfortunes of being in tire fires for organizations.

O’Rielly would give us top 5 center depth instantly and depending on the cost I’m definitely interested.
