He's five Grand Slams off Federer's record. Hmmm.

He lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-8 (he had three championship points in the 3rd set, but couldn't quite close the deal). For a 15 year old though, geez he was impressive.

Tennis never stops so we continue tomorrow. As you all know Bouchard is in Holland and plays Mertins tomorrow. Milos has the week off. Pospisil is at the same tournament and will play Garcia Lopez on Tuesday. This tournament is on grass.
On the challenger tour, Shapovalov has received a wildcard and will join Diez at the Moscow challenger. Diez plays Ilhan tomorrow while Shapovalov gets a wildcard player from France on Tuesday. This tournament is on clay.
Also Federer makes his return in Stuttgart.

Definitely not the start on grass Genie was looking for. She drops her Ricoh Open opener 6-2, 6-0 to qualifier Elise Mertens.

Very ugly start to a pretty crucial stretch for her. She has virtually no points to defend up until the US Open so a good run here could get her back ranked again, instead it looks like her self-mocking Twitter game is going stronger than her actual game.

Diez def. Ilhan 6-3, 6-3. Good win.

Nah, the lack of consistency is concerning but can't say it's over for her. And this is women's tennis, which is as unpredictable as any sport.

I wouldn't say that it's over for her, but I'm starting to think that we've already seen the best we'll ever see from her as a tennis player. She's got a lot of hard work the next 12-24 months if she wants to be a top 10 player again. But I think, and no offense to Genie or Milos, that Felix is our brightest hope for a future great player who can win majors.

Like Pospisil, Genie has the skills to carve out a lucrative career on tour but likely will never see the success she saw her first few years on tour. I will give her a little more time to re-adjust to working with Saviano again before writing her off completely. I don't expect to see her competing in the final rounds of majors or ranked as a top 10 again though.
Felix may have the best potential we've seen to date out of Canada but I'd caution putting too much stock into a 15 year old junior who hasn't played a single pro set. Filip Peliwo was having more success than Felix at this stage and it hasn't panned out for him. Not even close.

I know, that's why I'm basing my belief on Felix on his game and not his results. His baseline game for someone who isn't even old enough to drive is remarkably advanced. He has tremendous defensive skills and he has that Novak-like ability to turn defense into offense. He's still realistically two years away from being a full time tour player (still not physically ready mostly), but he has absolutely enormous potential. I know Peliwo had a nice junior career, but I never saw most tennis experts really high on him like I do with most experts on Felix. Consensus is pretty strong he's one of the most talented youngsters in the world.
