Will Neal bounce back as far as others? Probably not. But maybe. Or maybe he won’t. The fact this year was so extraordinarily bad maybe says he can’t possibly be as bad going forward.
If he’s not tradeable and a buyout after only one year is imprudent it seems like the best option is to trust he’s going to work hard in the offseason (his post season comments suggest he didn’t have the time to do so last year) and figure out what linemates and role can best position him to have that bounce back.

Carl Soderberg.

2017-18 77 GP 16-21-37

It's possible. Soderberg also turned 31 at the start of the 16/17 season similar to Neal.

As much as I have enjoyed watching Gaudreau and Monahan play for the flames I'm becoming convinced they are not able to drive the team in the playoffs.
Given that Gaudreau has indicated a desire to play closer to home later in his career, would Philly entertain.
Gaudreau and Monahan for Giroux and Couturier?
Flyers would be giving up 2 centers but gaining younger players and +20 regular season points.
Calgary gains size, toughness and 2 players that elevate their game in the playoffs.

Why would they?
They give up 2 centers who have size, toughness and the ability to elevate their game in the playoffs.
The Flames need to consider Nolan Patrick, and while a gamble, if Treliving thinks he's the real deal, this off season would be the only chance to get him likely.

Treliving specifically mentioned Hanifin, Kylington and Valimaki as important parts of the team going forward. Peters said that we have 10 guys when we only need 7. Reading between the lines, I think that means that one of Brodie or Hamonic are gone for sure.

So basically very much like the deal they made with the Kings and Blue Jackets back in the day. They let Joe Carter and Mike Richards go, then they let Brayden Shenn go to St. Louis for nothing.
The Flyers are always good for these sorts of deals. I think unless something like that comes along, the Flames need to be very patient. Joe Sakic was very patient with Duchene.

"Touch 'em all, Joe!"
And he never hit a bigger home run...

Well, as I said in the original post, they get younger guys that are on favorable term contracts plus a significant increase in regular season points.

Maybe just sign two of:
C - Matt Duchene/Joe Pavelski/Kevin Hayes/Eric Stall
Winger - Ferland/Simmons/Eberle
Get rid of Brodie, Frolik, Stone, etc.

Yes. Definitely this.
I would also hope some sort of Neal jettisoning from the team. Either swap out for another useless player that might be better at a role or pay someone to take him off our hands.

If the Flames sign Wayne Simmonds, it is almost guaranteed to be an unmitigated disaster.

You want the Flames to be worse next season?

Overpayment in this particular draft year IMO.

James Neal has as good of a chance of bouncing back as Lucic.
The best that can likely be hoped for in my opinion is that they cut back his icetime drastically for next season, play him 4th line minutes and healthy scratch him WAY more often unless he proves he still has what it takes to be an actual NHL calibre player early in the season.
No point in trying to force him to live up to that contract since he is a sunk cost and a sunk player.

I would be utterly shocked if Brodie is back.

Hamonic brings qualities that this team has very little off. I don't see him going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
Even if Brodie was playing well, he's a guy who can be replaced relatively painlessly...in may ways he already has been. I doubt we'll get the 1st people seem to be expecting, but he's a goner.
