Why? Honestly what is the benefit of having facilities spread out, having the same debate with 20 community associations, doing the same environmental studies, etc.

Why not just build a damn nice hockey arena that's one of the best out there.
Oh yeah..because this sports complex will turn us into Paris or New York and solidify our legacy in history. Also madonnas finally going to be able to perform in Calgary. Wow. I'm very disappointed. Looks like trying to kill 5 birds with one stone. So we really need a field house, there's contamination here, madonna needs to perform in Calgary, new cfl stadium and new nhl arena.
I'd like to see these projects separated.

What is the benefit of the city owning the building? they own it now and they dont get any revenue or lease payments? They get stuck with the Saddledome when the Flames move out.
and what stops the Flames from just up and leaving the city? we can talk about how that wouldnt happen but it almost did once. Even Katz flirted with a move to get a better deal. What is stopping the flames from doing so to get a better lease deal in 10 yrs?
The building is worthless without revenue generation. Worse, its a depreciating asset that will be worth nothing when the Flames move again.

Funny, because when I hear the man talk, I hear mostly BS caked with folksy stories and platitudes. At the end of the day, he has been in charge of this project since 2007, yet all they were able to accomplish in that time is release a semi-cohesive vision that's very low on detail, and ignores important things like Bow trail being realigned. This is honestly where they should've been 2-3 years ago.
If they want the City involved, the sooner someone like CMLC can take over the better. East Village is how it's done right.

not saying I don't want a new arena and stadium. not saying the project doesn't look interesting.
but there are some definite holes in this presentation. I can hardly blame KK for the sales job and hyperbole, but there is a load of spin/bs on the top of this, like you knew there would be...just irks me.
-was expecting the arena to seat more
-was expecting to hear more on the infrastructure/road/transportation side of things (KK says LRT will be the primary method of transport. well, not sure how that's going to work, we currently have LRT + massive car parking and both are still freaking nuts after a game)
-clean up and who's paying the bill etc.
-infrastructure/roads who's paying the bill etc.
So while I'm as excited as you guys for moving forward with something we do need, and I support a 'large sports area' rather than a 'distributed buildings setup'....But I think the 'vitirol' is more like 'legitimate concerns' as there should be from all of us.

I'm a bit confused about the MLS thing. Did Ken King say the fieldhouse couldn't support the MLS, or did he say that they would look at that in 10-15 years time?

Thank you cappy, my thoughts exactly. None of those things have been proven and it insults the intelligence of the fans and citizens to tell us we will be world class because of this. How about green lrt.
The only thing I like at all about this is the city would own it.

are you implying the Flames would consider leaving the city shortly after the arena was built?

The ownership thing is interesting but needs more details. Hillsborough County owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football stadium, but the Bucs operate it and keep all the revenues associated (gate, concessions, parking etc...), and the county pays for stadium maintenance and upgrades. So if this is the same, where the city owns and the Flames operate, it's nowhere near as good a deal as it appears.

The bare minimum NHL arena, similar to Pittsburgh I guess, is what will happen if none of this works out. This is similar to negotiating- why on earth would you go in asking for the bare minimum? Start big as a lot will undoubtedly be scaled back.

2) We all hate city / prov / fed tax money going to it. This does that. The city owns the building and land, and the users (ticket holders, developers, etc) pay for it. The CRL is generating tax revenue from a location that was providing next to no tax revenue
3) We all hate McMahon + the Dome compared to other arenas. We get a world class facility for toddlers to Olympians / professionals
4) We all hate polluted sites, especially in the middle of our city...we have one of the largest in Canada (apparently). This helps to take care of that.
I was thoroughly impressed with the vision. Of course the devil is in the details. But this is a humongous opportunity.
|
I 100% agree with this.
It is so interesting to hear such diametrically opposed views, with the negativity seemingly coming from nowhere.
The Flames' owners are willing to put in $200MM of their own money for something they are not going to own.
There is already a saddledome tax in play on current tickets.
Of course there is going to be a benefit to CSEC, in what form we do not know, but I am going to guess they will raise some money out of this.
