We are going to Brazil...we are going to Brazil...we are going, we are going, we are going to Brazil...

Dempsey misses on the 94th minute PK to ensure the "Dos a cero" at Columbus meme is enshrined for ever.

United States appear to be on a roll right now.

Big opportunity for them to take the next step internationally for in Brazil.

Traditionally European countries struggle in South American venues and it may lead to some opportunities for the Americans in Brazil next year.

Americans should be used to the conditions due to having to qualify against the central american teams

I have no delusions of grandeur concerning the U.S. squad. I would hope they make the knockout stage, anything after that is gravy.

I realized last night that this is the first US national team in any sport that I'm pretty much fully behind. I think it's a combination of time spent living in the US and the fact that Canada really isn't a factor in the sport that lead to it. I doubt it will happen in any other sport, but you've got me for this one.

That was a bad Mexican team. Not sure they could beat Canada right now.

Football Association of Ireland (Official)

One of the greatest names in football, a living legend and a true gentleman. It has been a pleasure to have worked with Giovanni Trapattoni over the last five and a half years.

His parting words today were, “We leave this country with emotion because we understand the Irish supporters who have a well-deserved international reputation and they have our utmost respect. I wish them well in the future and hope that the job we have done leaves everything in a good place for my successor to take over."

England and Italy are now reversed. England go on the road and play defensive looking for a point, Italy are bombing forward down the flanks like England used to.

I feel the same way. I actually admire how the Americans have continually improved everything about soccer in their country. The MLS, the quality of American players playing domestically and abroad, and the fan support. In fact, as a Canadian, I'm pretty jealous of all of it. They fully deserve to go to Brazil, and I'll be hoping that they do well there.

It helps having 10 X the population and resources, and a better climate.

Gary Lineker ‏@GaryLineker 23h When you see England pass it like they've never been introduced to each other, it does make you wonder why Carrick doesn't feature.

The greatest thing about the American team is that they beat those cheating Mexicans every time.

Absolutely, it helps. But if Canada's woes are due to population and climate, a country like Sweden (with 1/3 of Canada's population and a similar climate) shouldn't have qualified for 4 World Cups since Canada last qualified for one.

Just thinking about Canada's place in the soccer world makes me grumpy. Let's focus on teams that weren't eliminated nearly as soon as they stepped on the pitch.

Best thing about the American team is they are doing it like Americans, With a German Coach and players, Scandinavian players, and showing the melting pot that is the USA showing up on the football pitch

for those who missed it, the Jordan-Uzbekistan Asian 5th place playoff ended 1-1 in both legs so off to the penalty shootout.

A penalty shootout to determine your World Cup life, that's not nervewracking at all!
