I don't reckon it is a mortar. Looks thick as ####, gonna guess the explosive is in their and that is designed to focus the force of the blast upwards to do maximum damage to the bridge above.

Germany was slow to get started, but they've become serious in their support of Ukraine in a way others could take lessons from.

I don't even want to think about what kind of shape Ukraine would be in without Germany ramping up their support since the US aid pathetically withered away. Come a long way since the 5,000 helmet kafuffle. Good to see the Germans taking the russia security threat seriously.

Germany, Poland and Scandinavia not messing around. They know the threat that a renewed Russia poses and Ukraine is their best bet to tame the Russian bear (at least for now).

Those losses are really something, with modern warfare, as it is coming up to the 2 year mark. Compared to some of the other wars in history those numbers are right up there. That 384k has surpassed what the UK lost in WW2.

Doing a quick calculation, assuming those were all Russian citizens that have perished in this war with Ukraine, 1 in every 378 people in Russia have lost their lives in this conflict (145 million people in Russia). And that number continues to climb as this drags on.

Of course that number is likely a battlefield estimate and doesn't capture other Russian casualties, including those who's bodies have not been recovered, those who have been killed by their own Russian side for various reasons, or those who have lost their lives inside Russia due to opposition or escaping.

Canada's contribution to Operation reassurance is about 1K troops - mostly in Latvia. The Ukrainians have been knocking out about that many soldiers every day.

It’s a sad state of affairs for the Canadian Military. Would be nice if they would do what Germany is and start investing into making the military a priority.

It would be nice, but frankly the Canadian population doesn't care about the military, not one bit.

Does 'casualty' mean 'dead' or just 'dead or incapable of fighting due to crippling?

Casualties have historically been dead or injured.

Armies often focus on creating casualties more than creating dead.

Ukraine will be the first country to use the bomb in combat, making it a critical test case for other countries that have been snapping up long-range munitions since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Pentagon announced last February that the Biden administration was providing the new bomb to Ukraine. But before sending the new version, the U.S. military needed to test the weapon — and that took many months.

The Pentagon has completed successful tests of a new long-range precision bomb for Ukraine, set to reach the battlefield by 31 January, as reported by two US officials and sources familiar with the discussions, Politico says. This bomb, with a range of about 150 kilometers, is anticipated to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities significantly, according to one US official.

Really hope this is true, as at the time of writing this, Wednesday is tomorrow. Been a loooooong time coming.
